Production has officially begun on Disney+’s live-action/animated Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers movie.
The Lonely Island confirmed the news on Instagram, posting a set photo of a clapperboard listing Akiva Schaffer as director and Larry Fong (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Kong: Skull Island) as the Director of Photography. Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescuer Rangers will star Schaffer’s fellow Lonely Islander Andy Samberg as the voice of Dale, with John Mulaney voicing Chip.
Developed by Tad Stones and Alan Zaslove, the animated Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers TV series premiered on the Disney Channel in 1989 and ran for three seasons. The show follows the iconic Disney chipmunks Chip and Dale as they form the Rescue Rangers detective agency, solving crimes with the assistance of an adventurous, cheese-loving Australian mouse named Monterey Jack, a brilliant inventor mouse named Gadget Hackwrench and Monterey’s faithful housefly sidekick Zipper. Rescue Rangers later became part of the famous 1990s Disney animation lineup known as the Disney Afternoon, along with Darkwing Duck, Talespin and the original DuckTales.

In Jan. 2014, it was reported Disney was developing a live-action/animated Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers movie, with Robert Rugan writing and directing. Schaffer replaced Rugan at the helm in May 2019, with Doug Mand and Dan Gregor (Dolittle, Magic Camp) reportedly writing the script. The House of Mouse formally announced the project during its Disney’s Investor day 2020 presentation, revealing Mulaney and Samberg would voice Chip and Dale, respectively, with Seth Rogen making a cameo as an as-yet undisclosed character.
Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is one of several films slated to debut exclusively on Disney’s streaming platform over the next couple years. Other upcoming Disney+ Originals include the studio’s live-action remakes of its animated features Peter Pan and Pinocchio, along with the Enchanted sequel Disenchanted and a third entry in the Sister Act franchise, with Whoopi Goldberg reprising her role from the first two movies. At Disney’s Investor Day, the studio confirmed it’s also working on Hocus Pocus 2 for Disney+, in addition to a reboot of the 1987 comedy Three Men and a Baby starring Zac Efron. So far, however, Disney has yet to reveal concrete release dates for most of these titles.
Directed by Akiva Schaffer, Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers stars Andy Samberg, John Mulaney and Seth Rogen. The film arrives on Disney+ in spring 2022.
