The following contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 11, Episode 16, “Acts of God,” which aired Sunday on AMC.
The Walking Dead‘s mid-season finale delivers a healthy dose of Biblical symbolism, from a fleeting shot of a snake to a locust frenzy that Negan assures must be “a sign from the man upstairs.” Season 11, Episode 16, “Acts of God,” primarily focuses on Maggie, now dealing with the aftermath of getting on Lance Hornsby’s bad side. Maggie, correctly suspecting that Lance is after her head, leaves Hilltop with Hershel and Elijah, where Lydia leads them to one of the Whisperer’s old, underground hideouts. This is also where Negan, his expecting wife Annie and the rest of the Riverbend survivors have been hiding out.
However, Maggie’s main goal is to leave Hershel there; she doesn’t plan to stay herself. Instead, she wants to face Lance head-on. Maggie promptly shuts down Negan’s offer to join her, wanting him to stay behind to protect Hershel. While Negan ultimately agrees, he isn’t thrilled with the idea, saying, “He doesn’t exactly trust me, you know?” However, Maggie responds, “But I’m starting to,” in perhaps one of The Walking Dead‘s most shocking moments. She reminds him she hasn’t forgotten his good deed in saving Hershel from the crazed Carlson and his Commonwealth goonies. Maggie’s sentiment spotlights major character growth and the first step in forgiving Negan for Glenn’s death. Oh, and, of course, The Walking Dead needs to set up its planned Maggie/Negan spinoff that no one really asked for but is getting anyway.
While Negan and Maggie are mending their complicated relationship, Lance is descending — or perhaps — ascending — into a full-blown supervillain and behaving a lot like Two-Face with his beloved coin. Last week’s episode, “Trust,” concluded with Lance asking Leah if she wanted a job. Now, the job in question is revealed to be hunting and killing Maggie. The sinister plot aligns with both their interests. As Lance bluntly puts it, “You get the scalp of the woman who killed your family, and I finally get to do my job without interference.” Leah departs on her bounty hunting mission, with Lance reminding her that he’ll need proof Maggie is dead.
The episode builds to Maggie and Leah’s anticipated stand-off but not without a little drama in between. Maggie, Elijah and Lydia take out Leah’s accompanying soldiers with an explosive trap. Leah — the fearless one-man army that she is — emerges from the flames with a gun and a mission. Despite knowing they are being hunted by Leah, Maggie and Co. decide to spilt up, leaving Maggie on her own in the dark woods. Leah isn’t far behind, and after a brief shoot-out, she manages to knock Maggie unconscious.
When Maggie finally comes to, Leah has tied her to a chair in Leah’s old cabin — the once romantic love nest for her and Daryl as seen in Season 10C. Leah, still reeling from Pope and the Reapers’ deaths, promises to make Maggie suffer and kill everyone she’s ever loved. Maggie uses the threat to further instigate, buying her time to free herself from her binds. The two engage in a scary knife fight that leaves them both with bloody injuries and Maggie on her back with Leah strangeling her. Thankfully, Daryl — who had been previously cutting down Commonwealth soldiers with Aaron and Gabriel — arrives just in time to shoot Lead right in the head, killing her.
After letting each other escape multiple times and struggling to cope with their feelings, Daryl’s actions mark the definitive end of their complicated relationship. It also says a lot about the fan-favorite Walking Dead hero; he was willing to kill the woman he loved — and still loved — to save his found family. That said, we don’t get to see much emotion from Daryl — who is preoccupied by Lance and his encroaching army. However, it will likely be explored later, with Daryl perhaps seeking comfort from Carol, who is one of the few people to know about his full history with Leah. With Maggie under his arm, they sneak out the back but not before Daryl grazes a bullet across Lance’s cheek. Together, Maggie and Daryl return to the Riverbend hideout, and Maggie reunites with Hershel looking like she walked straight out of Stephen King’s Carrie.
Back at the Commonwealth, Eugene and Max have elevated their relationship from a loving kiss to some sexy time. Max is still on board with exposing the rogue government and the Miltons’ corruption. With her help, Eugene, Connie, Kelly, Magna and later Ezekiel piece together information using one of Pamela’s stolen files and the list of names that was anonymously gifted to Connie. Although Connie says she doesn’t have enough proof to confirm the corruption completely, she decides she has enough to plant doubt in the minds of the Commonwealth’s people. And, of course, Pamela is less than thrilled when she discovers “Pamela Milton Is Lying To You” running across the newspaper’s front page.
Although things are headed in the right direction, it is not without risk. Sebastion — Pamela’s painfully spoiled and annoying son — caught Max stealing one of his mother’s files red-handed. This spells serious trouble for Max. Given Sebastian isn’t afraid to send innocents to their deaths, it’s doubtful he’d think twice about killing her or anyone of The Walking Dead protagonists.
However, even bigger problems await the protagonists when Season 11 returns after the mid-season finale. The episode concludes with Lance staking claim over Alexandria and Hilltop and proudly displaying the Commonwealth’s banner. There’s also the question of whether more will come from the titular “acts of God.” After all, the episode began with a flashback to “one act of God ago,” suggesting there are others to follow.
“Acts of God” is The Walking Dead’s mid-season finale, Season 11 Part 3 will premiere later in 2022.
