Casper the Friendly Ghost is coming to Peacock.
According to Variety, a new live-action Casper series is being developed by UCP and DreamWorks Animation from writer/executive producer Kai Yu Wu (Hannibal, The Flash). The show is described as “a horror/adventure show that reimagines the origin of Casper in a coming-of-age story that explores what it means to be alive. When a new family arrives in the small town of Eternal Falls, Casper finds himself entangled in a mystery uncovering dark secrets that have been buried for over 100 years.”
Created by Seymour Reit, Joe Oriolo and Vincent E. Valentine, Casper the Friendly Ghost debuted in 1936’s The Friendly Ghost magazine before jumping to animation in 1945. In 1952, the character’s tales began being published in comic book form by Harvey Comics, but his biggest claim to fame is the 1995 live-action movie from Universal Pictures, with Malachi Pearson voicing Casper and Devon Sawa playing his human form, with Christina Ricci playing Kat Harvey.
“Hello Universal, ya it’s me Devon…. Sawa… SAwa with an S.,” Sawa tweeted in 2017, alluding to returning for a Casper sequel. “Never mind, I’m ready to come back and do another Casper… yes the ghost!” That sequel was canceled in 2000 and has yet to come to fruition.
