Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s Ending, Explained

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 brought back the popular Sega character, voiced by Ben Schwartz, and once more pitted him against Jim Carrey’s Robotnik. The evil doctor had a trump card this time, however, with Knuckles (Idris Elba) joining him to take out Sonic. They formed a sinister alliance, whereby Robotnik would help Knuckles find the Master Emerald, and in return, Knuckles would take out the blue-quilled hero and allow Robotnik to rule Earth.

As expected, Robotnik had ulterior motives, knowing the power within this emerald, matching up with his lifelong ambition to be the sole ruler of all reality. That led to an electrifying finale in which old pacts were broken and new ones were made, all while reiterating how important the theme of family was.

What Happened With The Master Emerald In Sonic 2?

Knuckles and Robotnik were able to beat down Sonic and steal a mystical compass that pointed them to a lost temple in the waters off Hawaii, akin to Angel Island. A resilient Sonic left Tom and Maddie at Rachel’s wedding after ruining it, vowing to stop the tyrant himself. However, while Sonic sped over and gave Knuckles the fight of his life, the distraction allowed Robotnik to steal the gem for himself.

The Master Emerald granted Robotnik the powers of a god, enabling him to convert “thought into reality.” As such, when the G.U.N. agents came for him, Robotnik formed his iconic giant mech back in Green Hills after partnering with his obsessively loyal assistant, Stone. Robotnik wanted to use them as an example as to what he could really do now that he was a cosmic lord, wielding a clear tribute to his Death Egg machine from the games.

How Did Knuckles Redeem Himself In Sonic 2?

Robotnik left Knuckles for dead, with rubble trapping in beneath the water. Sonic saved Knuckles, however, and nearly died in the process. Knuckles returned the favor, asking why would Sonic risk himself for the enemy. Sonic rattled off Tom’s speech about family and responsibility, which convinced Knuckles to switch sides.

They joined up with Tails on the mainland, and the new coalition attacked Robotnik’s metal titan. Sonic distracted him, allowing Knuckles, Tails, Tom and Maddie to work together and grab the emerald. The gem shattered, however, freeing the seven Chaos Emeralds. Just when Robotnik was about to crush Sonic with his bot, though, Sonic absorbed the power of the gems and became Super Sonic. He transcended into his golden godhood and smacked Robotnik’s machine down, winning the war.

What Happened To Team Sonic And Their Enemies?

Sonic came back down to his tribe, worrying Knuckles, who thought he’d become an arrogant god. Funnily enough, Sonic bent reality to rain chili dogs down, because he was hungry. He then relinquished the power, allowing Knuckles to re-form the emerald. Sonic just wasn’t ready to harness this power because he had a lot to learn about being a hero.

It made his parents proud, with this act of benevolence convincing Knuckles he made the right choice. He reformed the crystal, and together with Sonic and Tails, they decided to guard the gem. They joined Tom and Maddie’s family, with a flash-forward showing them all playing baseball. They almost forgot the drinks cooler with the gem, but Sonic grabbed it, eager to continue bonding with his new siblings. He had a lot to teach Knuckles about being kind and well, human, but Tails was already all in because he always longed for the family he never had on his world.

Ultimately, their kinship augured well for future movies, because the post-credits hinted at massive threats to come. G.U.N. didn’t find Robotnik’s body, which means he could return to continue his vendetta. In addition, a secret lab was revealed, setting up Shadow to hunt Sonic, just like the video games.
