WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, now playing in theaters
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 largely incorporates a lot of elements from the greater Sonic franchise into the film universe, utilizing Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba) to expand the cast and give Sonic (Ben Schwartz) a new host of characters to bounce off of. By the end of the film, the trio is positioned to go on plenty of new adventures as they strive to protect the Master Emerald from anyone who would try to claim it. But the post-credits tag for the film hints that another hedgehog — Shadow — might be entering the fray soon enough, setting him up to appear in future installments in the series.
At the conclusion of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the titular blue blur has defeated Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey) once again. Returning to his quiet life with Tom (James Mardsen) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter), Sonic is joined by his newfound friends, Tails and Knuckles. Meanwhile, GUN, an international agency dedicated to hunting down “extra-terrestrials” like Sonic, investigates the site of Sonic’s final battle with Robotnik. Although they can’t find the mad scientist, their attempts to scrub him from their databases turn up a surprising secret — a secret base that has housed a hedgehog in stasis for half a century under the codename Project: Shadow. As GUN’s commander Walters (Tom Butler) learns this, audiences are introduced to the project as Shadow seemingly wakes up inside a capsule.
Shadow’s presence in the film — which had been at the heart of rumors surrounding a leak of the film — is something of a big deal. The character was introduced in 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2 as a dark counterpart to Sonic and was revealed to have been the result of genetic engineering on the part of Gerald Robotnik (the current Doctor Robotnik’s grandfather) in a desperate bid to save his granddaughter Maria from an illness. Having formed a close bond with Maria, Shadow went berserk after she was murdered by GUN and was kept in cryogenic sleep for decades.
In the present day, an awakened Shadow initially became an antagonist for Sonic, only for his own promises to Maria to eventually force him down a more heroic path. The character — despite remaining controversial in parts of the fanbase due to the poor attempts to make him an “edgy” alternative to Sonic — has been repeatedly voted as one of the franchise’s most popular characters, so it’s not surprising to see him make the leap to the big screen.
In theory, Shadow is a perfect antagonist to introduce for a third entry in the film series. His speed and skills are often a match for Sonic, and his darker morality allows him to embark on storylines that might be too dark for the more cheerful blue blur. Shadow’s debut also sets up a continuation of the Chaos Emeralds storyline teased by the film, as his connection to the power source is a major thread for his appearances in Sonic Adventure 2.
Shadow’s appearance in the films seems like a no-brainer, especially since the franchise intends to expand outwards with new films focusing on different characters. Shadow’s role in any prospective sequel should give Sonic a genuine rival to face off with (as opposed to the friendly bond that develops between him and Knuckles). But having it seemingly hew so close to his original game-canon origin could set the stage for Robotnik’s return, as well, and potentially set the stage for other characters like Rogue the Bat (a frequent ally of Shadow) to make an appearance.
