Sesame Street‘s Elmo is now channeling The Batman in his viral feud with fellow Muppet Zoe’s pet rock, Rocco.
On Twitter, the official Elmo account recently shared a photo of the red Muppet sporting his very own Batman costume. The official DC account quote-tweeted the post, adding an image of Elmo (as Batman) screaming “What have you done?” at Rocco, who is inside a cell. A subsequent image of Rocco is blurry, though Zoe’s pet rock is clearly channeling the Joker, sporting black eye makeup and a red, painted-on smile.
Rocco’s makeup and the blurriness of his turn as the Joker are clearly meant to evoke the now-famous deleted scene from The Batman in which Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight comes face-to-face with Barry Keoghan’s Clown Prince of Crime. That said, Batman, of course, does not actually say “What have you done?” to the Joker in the film — he says it to Paul Dano’s Riddler, the main villain of the piece.
Rocco was first introduced to Sesame Street all the way back in early 1999. However, Elmo’s feud with Rocco truly started to go viral earlier this year, as many onlookers couldn’t help but be amused at the sheer amount of vitriol and disdain Elmo seems to have for Zoe’s pet rock. One scene from a 2004 episode of Sesame Street made the rounds on social media, revolving around Elmo being annoyed that Rocco had already laid claim to the flavor of cookie he wanted.
“Has anybody ever seen a rock eat a cookie? Elmo is just curious,” the official Elmo account tweeted. This caught the attention of none other than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. “Yes, my friend. This Rock devours cookies. All kinds of cookies,” Johnson tweeted. “I’ll introduce you to #CheatMeals and it’ll change your life. Tell Cookie Monster to move it over, cuz I’m coming to Sesame Street to kick ass and eat cookies. And I’m almost all outta cookies.” (In case you’re wondering, Cookie Monster accepted The Rock’s challenge.)
The Batman is in theaters now. The film will be available to stream on HBO Max on April 19 — at which point it will join the 52 seasons of Sesame Street already on the platform.
