Marvel Studios’ Disney+ limited series Moon Knight has made no secret of that fact that it aims to keep viewers guessing regarding what’s real and what isn’t. However, directors Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson have promised an especially “mind-bending” twist in the show’s upcoming fourth episode.
“As you say, there’s a big, mind-bending swing in episode four that makes you reconsider some of the stuff that you’ve seen,” Moorhead said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “Being able to do stuff like that — which pops up all over the comics, and also do great service to the tone and feel of the comics, the excitement of opening something up and seeing something you haven’t seen before — was one of the reasons that we wanted to do this.”
“When you look at the 50 years of incredible content that’s been generated for Moon Knight and Marvel, the best of it is defined by taking big swings, by being bold,” Benson added. “So in that way, we were empowered to continue that, to be bold, especially with [episode four]. Visually, something that we were really drawn to, especially for that episode, was the [Jeff] Lemire and [Greg] Smallwood run [of Moon Knight].”
Starring Oscar Isaac in the lead role, Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight premiered its first episode, “The Goldfish Problem,” on Disney+ this past Wednesday, March 30. The series is set to run for six episodes in total through May 4. It remains to be seen if Isaac’s Marc Spector will return for any future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, though he his more than willing to do so, provided it’s for a story “worth telling.”
“Following in Legion‘s footsteps, Moon Knight uses visions, mirroring, time-lapses, and more to set up its unique take on showing Disassociate Identity Disorder on a cinematic scale. It doesn’t lean as much into trippy VFX work as that FX series did, but there are definitely some timey-wimey shenanigans to behold,” CBR’s own Cass Clarke wrote in their official Moon Knight review, which is based upon the show’s first four episodes. “…One thing is for certain though, Moon Knight is thoroughly entertaining in its design, concept, look, and feel that it brings to the MCU as a whole.”
New episodes on Moon Knight stream Wednesdays on Disney+.
