It has long been known that Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would feature a multiversal variant of Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) known as “Defender Strange.” However, a new piece of merchandise reveals that Defender Strange isn’t coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe alone.
Per the Multiverse of Madness news account Doctor Strange 2 Updates, Monogram International is set to release a new line of keychain figures featuring characters from the film, such as Doctor Strange, Defender Strange, Supreme Strange, Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) and more. In addition to a figure of the MCU’s main version of Wong (Benedict Wong), a figure of “Defender Wong” is also listed. This Wong variant has the same demeanor, hairstyle and facial hair as his counterpart, though sports a different outfit.
Wong, Doctor Strange’s right-hand man, was first introduced to the MCU in 2016’s Doctor Strange. Benedict Wong subsequently reprised the role in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and the 2021 films Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Multiverse of Madness will mark his sixth outing as the character.
No Way Home confirmed that Wong had ascended to the rank of Sorcerer Supreme, due to the fact that Strange had effectively been dead for five years after falling victim to Thanos’ snap in Infinity War. Strange, meanwhile, attempted to wipe the knowledge of Spider-Man’s secret identity from the world at the latter’s request. However, the spell went terribly awry and broke open the multiverse, thus setting up the Doctor Strange sequel. The film also serves as a follow-up to Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series WandaVision.
“In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary,” an official synopsis for the Multiverse of Madness reads.
See Defender Strange and Defender Wong in action when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases in theaters on May 6.
