Netflix’s The Witcher Prepares to Begin Filming | CBR

The stars of Netflix’s The Witcher Season 3 have officially arrived on set in preparation to begin filming.

Actor Henry Cavill, who stars as Geralt of Rivia, recently confirmed as much on social media when he posted a shot of his horse, Hector, who will serve as Season 3’s Roach, following the heroic demise of Geralt’s noble mare. According to Redanian Intelligence, Cavill is joined by Freya Allen, who plays Ciri, in Northern Slovenia.

Photos from the set suggest filming will take place in Kranjska Gora, with some reporting filming will move to Predjama Castle, near Postojna, which is scheduled to close until April 5. However, this has not yet been confirmed. It was previously reported that this season would film in Slovenia, Italy and Croatia. In addition, filming in the United Kingdom has moved from Arborfield Studios in Berkshire to Longcross Studios in Surrey.

Previous reports revealed production for The Witcher Season 3 was scheduled for the first quarter of 2022 and that filming would take place under the title “Mysterious Monsters.” Confirmation that a third season had been greenlit only came in July, when showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich announced Season 3, alongside several other Witcher projects, at Netflix’s TUDUM event.

Season 3 will largely be based on the second novel in Andrzej Sapkowski’s core Witcher saga, Time of Contempt, which sees Ciri begin her training in magic under the guidance of Yennefer of Vengerberg. Hissrich previously suggested a greater scale for the third season, stating “I’m really thrilled with how the season is shaping up because it’s based on my favorite book in the saga, which is The Time of Contempt… I feel like seasons 1 and 2 have been laying the playing field for everything huge that’s about to happen.”

The next season may also be notable for potentially steering the live-action series closer to the source material. At Lucca Comic & Games in October, Hissrich teased The Witcher Season 3 will feature more death and monsters and said, “It’s a really fun season and it follows a particular book really closely.” This may be noteworthy for some, as Season 2 only loosely adapted the novel, Blood of Elves, and reimagined certain elements and characters.

But the upcoming third season of The Witcher is not the only major project coming to Netflix’s Witcher universe. A prequel series is also scheduled to be released before Season 3 hits screens. The Witcher: Blood Origin is set 1,200 years prior to the events of the main series and will see the return of a major antagonist: Voleth Meir. The demon was revealed in the The Witcher Season 2’s finale to be a rider of the Wild Hunt, who will also be explored in the prequel series.
