James Gunn Confirms an Uplifting ‘Rumor’ About Peacemaker’s Freddie Stroma

Vigilante might not be the nicest member of the Peacemaker team but according to series writer/director James Gunn, his actor Freddie Stroma makes up for it.

A humorous tweet “accused” Freddie Stroma of being “a really sweet guy who treats everyone with respect.” Upon seeing this breaking news, Gunn replied and said “I can confirm this rumor.”

In Peacemaker, Stroma plays Adrian Chase/Vigilante, an anti-hero that hails from the same town as John Cena’s Christopher Smith and aims to emulate him. Despite their training and fondness for weapons, Chase doesn’t share the Peacemaker’s code and conscience. This is clearly seen in Episode 3 when Peacemaker is unable to kill a family of Butterflies and Vigilante cheerfully steps in. “Vigilante is a very different sort of ‘hero’,” Gunn said. “He was an interesting character to play with, because he is a sociopath.” Despite Vigilante’s lack of emotion and his struggle to understand others and read situations, there is a “sweetness” to him that Gunn credits to Stroma’s performance.

Stroma was not the original pick for the role as Gunn filmed five and a half episodes of the show with Chris Conrad under the Vigilante mask. Conrad left the production due to creative differences, leading to Gunn reshooting all of the already filmed Vigilante scenes with Stroma instead. “But yeah, we re-shot,” Gunn confirmed. “I directed all of the scenes with Vigilante in five and a half episodes.”

This isn’t the first time that Gunn has spoken about Stroma’s lovable aspects. Before casting him, Gunn wanted to make sure he had the right actor for the part. This meant that Stroma not only had to be a good enough performer, but that he also had to pass Gunn’s “a–hole check.” The director contacted actor Elizabeth Banks, who worked with Stroma on the movie Pitch Perfect, to ensure that he really was a good guy. “Also I should thank [Elizabeth Banks],” Gunn said. “She told me he was great & she was right!”

The policy of not casting non-toxic performers was also vouched for by John Cena. He credited Gunn’s “vetting process” with being the reason why the cast and crew worked together so effortlessly to make the best show that they could. Cena explained that “everybody shines, because everybody wants to give everybody a chance to shine.” Much like his director, Cena also made sure to reserve some praise specifically for Stroma. “Freddie was just no different. He came in and absolutely slayed,” recalled Cena.

Peacemaker Season 1 can be streamed on HBO Max.
