Acting superstar Bruce Willis’ family revealed on social media that the acting legend has been diagnosed with Aphasia, a disorder that affects your ability to speak and communicate. As a result, the iconic movie star will be “stepping away” from his acting career.
The family of the 67-year-old star each shared the same adorable image of the actor wearing sunglasses and a bathrobe on their respective Instagram accounts while revealing that Willis will stop acting as he “has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities.”
Aphasia, according to the Merriam-Webster Medical Dictionary, is defined as “loss or impairment of the power to use or comprehend words usually resulting from brain damage (as from a stroke, head injury, or infection).” In other words, it is less a disease in and of itself so much as it is a disorder resulting from some other problem with one’s cognitive functions. It is unclear at this point in time what those problems are.
Willis’ acting career began in the early 1980s, but it wasn’t until he landed the co-lead on the hit TV drama, Moonlighting, in 1985, that he became a breakout star. His TV fame soon segued into film stardom with 1988’s Die Hard, launching a literal billion dollar franchise with four sequels to the action film. Other hits followed, including The Sixth Sense, Armageddon, Pulp Fiction, Unbreakable and The Fifth Element. Overall, films starring Willis have grossed over $5 billion at the worldwide box office. Willis has been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards and three Emmy Awards, winning one Golden Globe for Moonlighting and two Emmys (one for Moonlighting and one for a famous guest spot on Friends).
Willis’ family also pointed out what a challenging time it was for them and finished by stating, “[W]e are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support. We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him. As Bruce always says, “Live it up” and together we plan to do just that.”
The message was then signed by Willis’ six daughters ( Rumer Willis, Scout Willis, Tallulah Willis, Mabel Willis and Evelyn Willis), his wife, Emma Heming Willis and his ex-wife, Demi Moore. All eight of them shared it on their individual Instagram accounts.
