Marvel Merch May Spoil I Am Groot’s Disney+ Premiere Window | CBR

An official subscription box may offer a more specific release window for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ animated series I Am Groot.

A recent Amazon listing update confirms that I Am Groot will be the theme of the next Funko Marvel Collector Corps box. The Direct says the box is slated for release in May 2022, while Hello Subscription lists a June 2022 release. At any rate, this suggests that I Am Groot will premiere on Disney+ sometime this summer.

After all, almost every Collector Corps box based on a Marvel Studios production has been listed to coincide with the release of the production itself. For example, the July 2021 box was based on the Marvel Studios animated series What If…?, which premiered on Disney+ on Aug. 11, 2021.

Meanwhile, the September 2021 box was based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings — which released in theaters on Sept. 3, 2021 — while the November 2021 box was based on the film Eternals — which itself hit theaters on Nov. 5, 2021. Mind you, there is sometimes a wider gap, with the March 2022 box being based on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is slated for release on May 6, 2022.

What’s more, the MCU is already slated to have a stacked on-screen presence over the spring and summer. The Disney+ original series Moon Knight premieres tomorrow, March 30. Then, the film Multiverse of Madness releases in May, the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel premieres in June and the film Thor: Love and Thunder releases in July. Meanwhile, the Disney+ series She-Hulk still lacks an official premiere date, though is also expected to premiere this year, sometime after Ms. Marvel.

In other words, I Am Groot‘s supposed summer release window could make for a tight fit. That said, it should also be noted that the Guardians of the Galaxy spinoff is not a full-length series, but a series of shorts that will likely prioritize comedy over story progression. Because it’s a collection of shorts, there’s also the possibility that the whole series could drop at once, as opposed to a weekly release schedule.

Marvel Studios’ I Am Groot was first announced for Disney+ in December 2020, with Variety later describing the project as a series of “‘photo-real’ animated shorts centered on Baby Groot.” Guardians of the Galaxy writer-director James Gunn himself confirmed that the show would be animated that that it would be premiering sometime in 2022, though he did not offer a more specific release window beyond that. Gunn is also helming The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which is expected to premiere on Disney+ in December 2022.
