BRZRKR’s Protocol X May Break Keanu Reeves’ Immortal Warrior

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for BRZRKR #7, now available from BOOM! Studios.

In Keanu Reeves’ BRZRKR, the U.S. Government has been trying to unlock the secret to the warrior’s immortality. It’s part of a deal B brokered that would allow the country to weaponize his abilities as they see fit, as long as they finally grant him rest after all is said and done. The immortal warrior for thousands of years, and he has now grown tired of the hunt.

However, the chief scientists, Caldwell and Diana, haven’t been forthcoming about their true goals. Unfortunately, B is so consumed with ending his suffering that he isn’t thinking clearly. The situation appears to be on the edge of becoming even worse with the activation of Protocol X in issue #7 (by Reeves, Matt Kindt, Ron Garney, Bill Crabtree and Clem Robins), an initiative that may not only break the soldier but also unleash hell on earth.

Caldwell plans to extract memories from B’s mind, knowing that he has traversed the entire planet and holds info from many civilizations. This is the ultimate power as it would help the scientists create superhumans and develop new tech for the future. This project is referred to as Protocol X and was developed based on Diana’s previous studies of the immortal warrior.

By tapping into B’s emotions, the scientists found a way to access his repressed memories of different times. However, he must be isolated in order for this method to be effective, so Caldwell plans to bury him beneath the Mojave Desert. This will allow him to tap directly into the mind of B while also siphoning energy from his body that can be used to power weapons and new technology.

The problem with this idea is that B’s mind is so splintered that there is no way to predict which of his personas will emerge. If the savage warrior who culled thousands across Pangea emerged in a blind rage, B could become a terrifying weapon of mass destruction. In a sense, by trying to harness this militaristic Hulk, they could potentially unleash a new, uncontrollable threat.

B has previously lost control of himself, which explains why he’s willing to go to such lengths to quell the monster within. Unfortunately, Caldwell doesn’t seem to care and is willing to take the risk, oblivious to what he could be unleashing upon the world.
