A movie’s characters play a huge part in what draws audiences in to watch. What makes a movie’s cast so brilliant is having characters with different and unique personalities and characteristics and seeing how that affects how each of them responds to certain situations.

One way to categorize fictional characters is by their MBTI, or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Of the 16 different personality types, labeled by four letters, INFPs are “the Mediators.” INFPs are empathetic introverts who feel strongly, have creative imaginations, and are deeply sensitive and caring. Despite being a rarer personality type, they are represented by characters in many movies.

Nicknamed “Loony Lovegood” by many of the students at Hogwarts, Luna is introduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when the main trio shares a carriage to the castle with her. Luna is deeply misunderstood. Whilst her imagination does run a little wild sometimes, she is an intelligent, passionate friend and ally to Harry once he gets to know her better.

Luna is a soft-spoken, calming presence and can read and understand the emotions of those around her. She is somebody that the characters, especially Harry, like having around as she makes them feel comfortable and safe.

Belle, from Disney’s classic animation Beauty and the Beastmay seem isolated and introverted, but she dreams of a world like that in her storybooks, where there is more to offer than her life in the village. Belle is kind to the village’s people, especially the children, even though she is treated as an outsider.

Belle is strong, sacrificing her freedom in order to save her father, and is imprisoned in a castle by the Beast. Despite the events of the film, she chooses to try and see the best in the Beast and eventually helps him open up to her.

Whilst many versions of Spider-Man present typical traits of an INFP personality type, these are most prevalent in Tobey Maguire’s portrayal of the character. Maguire’s Peter Parker is slightly awkward and introverted, but the ones he loves mean absolutely everything to him and he goes to great lengths to protect them. For someone so young, Parker has a strong moral compass and although he attempts to see the best in people, he can stand up to them when he believes it is the right thing to do.

Luca Paguro is the titular character of Disney Pixar’s 2021 movie LucaLuca is an adventurous, wholesome young sea monster who, despite his parents’ warnings that he might be hunted for food, longs to spend time on land amongst the humans.

Luca chooses to believe that there must be good amongst humans and meets a young boy and girl, Alberto and Giulia, who prove his theory. Luca’s compassion and caring personality help him form a bond with those on land and eventually unite the humans and sea monsters.

Wanda Maximoff is an extremely complex character and as such, displays characteristics of many personality types. However, an INFP personality type can be seen in the way she comes across on screen. Wanda’s traumatic past has left her quiet, introverted, and closed-off, initially only opening up to Vision.

However, whilst she makes many poor decisions in recent films, at her core, she is deeply caring and wants to fight for what is right. Wanda’s sacrificial nature and strength are a huge part of what helps the Avengers defeat Thanos and marks her as a hero. Wanda is fundamentally an INFP, even if the actions of those around her push her down different paths.

The young daughter of The Incredibles family, Violet Parr, is introduced as a typical INFP, being shy, soft-spoken and introverted. Violet is often shown hiding behind her long hair and her superpower of invisibility mimics her wish to deflect attention away from her.

Being a romantic at heart, Violet longs to be able to talk to Tony, a popular boy at school, but is too afraid. Throughout the movie, Violet finds strength in her superpowers, which then translates into her regular life as she manages to open up more to those around her.

Lucy is the first of her siblings to discover Narnia and as such forms a bond with the world and many who inhabit it. Lucy is extremely open-minded to Narnia and all of its people and stops at nothing to make sure they are all safe, making her an obvious INFP.

Whether consciously or not, Antonio acts as a mediator in his family. When tensions grow even stronger between the family and Mirabel, the protagonist who is the only powerless member of the family, Antonio attempts to bring them together and makes sure Mirabel has a place in his gift ceremony.
