The world of anime is populated with characters of all sorts, from brave and daring shonen heroes to cold and calculating villains and everything in between. In these stories, the most exciting and unpredictable characters are the risk-takers who won’t hesitate to jump into the fire, but other anime characters take the opposite approach.
A cautious anime character won’t push their luck if they can help it. Instead, these cautious characters will avoid excessive risks or danger, and they would rather fight an enemy or undertake a mission when they are sure that things will go their way. Those characters aren’t necessarily cowardly or indecisive, but neither are they reckless risk-takers.
10 Ryota Suzui Is A Careful Gambler (Kakegurui)
Unlike his wild and hedonistic friend, Yumeko Jabami, the meek protagonist Ryota Suzui is a cautious and somewhat timid gambler who approaches everything with moderation. He is only a mediocre gambler by Hyakkou standard, so he can rarely afford to go big or go home.
That’s why Ryota serves as a supporting character in Kakegurui while the risk-loving Yumeko takes center stage, and it works out well. Ryota may be cautious, but even he is ready to take on risks if Yumeko takes the lead and encourages him, and it sometimes pays off.
9 Uryu Ishida Won’t Act Without A Plan (Bleach)
Ichigo’s Quincy friend, Uryu Ishida, is a well-balanced shonen lead in many ways. He is cautious and only takes action when he has a crafty plan in mind, but Uryu is also bold and decisive, which makes for a winning combination. He could easily be a shonen protagonist in his own right.
Uryu prefers stealth and preparation in his missions, and he would rather not leave things to chance if he can help it. If the situation is truly dire, Uryu might improvise and take risks, but that’s not his preferred method. He would rather win the battle in his head before making a move.
8 Shikamaru Nara Also Prefers Planning (Naruto)
The genius Shikamaru Nara has a lot in common with Uryu Ishida, with both of them being major supporting characters who balance the hero’s reckless ways with a cautious and careful attitude. Shikamaru, like Uryu, is capable of bold action and is quite brave, but he doesn’t let himself get carried away.
More than once, Shikamaru held his reckless team back to avoid traps, and it pays off. Shikamaru doesn’t want to play into the enemy’s hands with reckless action. Instead, he’ll form a brilliant plan and carefully proceed into battle on his own terms. He feels no need to roll the dice with his life.
7 Iruma Suzuki Keeps A Low Profile (Welcome To Demon School, Iruma-Kun!)
The isekai hero Iruma Suzuki was sold by his own selfish parents to the demonic underworld, where Lord Sullivan bought him and adopted him as a beloved foster grandson. Iruma is the only human being in the entire Netherworld, and he has to take great care to keep that fact hidden, or else.
Iruma keeps a low profile during his time at the Babyls school, and he uses a variety of methods to pass himself off as a demon. Also, Iruma rarely, if ever, picks fights. Instead, the fights come to him, and Iruma must do what he can to survive as a mere human.
6 Near Is Nothing Like The Reckless Mello (Death Note)
The original detective L was fairly cautious, though he also took serious risks in a desperate attempt to capture Kira, such as when he met Light Yagami as a fellow student at To-Oh University. One of L’s successors, the white-haired Near, is even more cautious than that.
For years, Near worked patiently and carefully to gather evidence on Kira before making his move five years after L’s downfall, though his ultra-cautious methods slowed him down a bit. Near didn’t finish the job until he made good use of Mello’s reckless moves to finally corner Kira.
5 Zenitsu Agatsuma Isn’t Keen On Taking Risks (Demon Slayer)
The thunder-breathing slayer Zenitsu Agatsuma is slowly becoming braver and bolder as a slayer, though he still has a reputation for cowardice. On a more flattering note, Zenitsu is also a cautious and careful demon slayer who fully understands just how risky and hazardous his occupation really is. He’s not wrong to be cautious around demons.
Coward or not, Zenitsu is noted for being careful when the gang arrives in demon territory, and he’s not liable to just charge in and fight the first demon he finds. He would rather hang back and wait until the right time to strike, and to an extent, Tanjiro feels the same way.
4 Momo Yaouorozu Won’t Act Without A Plan (My Hero Academia)
Like Uryu and Shikamaru, the creation hero Momo Yaoyorozu is capable of bold action during a mission, but she won’t act until she has a solid plan in mind to minimize the risks. Heroes like Katsuki Bakugo just leap right into the fray and fight by instinct, but no Momo.
Instead, Momo will carefully analyze the terrain and her foes and develop a plan to maximize her team’s advantages and nullify the enemy’s own assets. Then, and only then, will Momo make her move and win a calculated victory.
3 Naofumi Iwatani Won’t Gamble With His Life (The Rising Of The Shield Hero)
The shield hero Naofumi Iwatani has no choice but to be cautious and avoid risks during his adventure in the Melromarc kingdom. He has no offensive power on his own, and for a time, he had no support from the other three Cardinal Heroes and the kingdom itself. Taking risks wasn’t an option for him.
So, Naofumi proceeded slowly and carefully, and he always considered the consequences of his actions ahead of time, something which the other Heroes didn’t do. It paid off, and the cautious Naofumi became a smart and practical hero who could save the day in style.
2 Sokka Is Wary Of The World (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
The animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender stars the Gaang, a group made up of Avatar Aang, Sokka, Katara, and Toph Beifong, and they strike a balance between caution and daring action. Of the four of them, Sokka is the most cautious, to the point he didn’t even trust Aang at first.
Sokka feels responsible for the entire Southern Water Tribe, and he would stand to lose a lot if he took too many reckless risks. Sokka often warns Aang and Katara to avoid trouble during their journey, but his friends can’t help but save others, so the cautious Sokka must tag along or get left behind.
1 Megumi Tadokoro Rarely Issues Challenges (Food Wars!)
Soma Yukihira is a big risk-taker, and he loves to issue and accept challenges all the time. Then there’s his cautious new friend, the lovely Megumi Tadokoro, who uses comforting home-style cooking to impress the judges. She rarely experiments in the kitchen, though she did challenge herself to skin and cook a monkfish, which is saying a lot.
Megumi followed Soma’s lead and learned to be a braver and more confident chef, but she still didn’t like taking risks, and she rarely, if ever, challenged other chefs to risky shokugeki matches. Instead, Megumi slowly and surely built herself up as a chef until she took part in the BLUE tournament for the ultimate challenge.
