Moon Knight‘s age rating has been updated in the United Kingdom just days before its premiere on Disney+, solidifying that it will be Marvel Studios’ most mature original series to date.
Across the pond, Moon Knight is currently rated 16+, according to The Direct. This puts it on the same level as the Netflix Marvel series Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher. Daredevil is rated 18+, making it the most mature Marvel series on the platform in the UK.
Moon Knight‘s 16+ rating is significantly higher than its fellow Disney+ Marvel Studios originals. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If…? and Hawkeye are all rated 12+, while WandaVision‘s 9+ rating makes it the most child friendly. The United Kingdom’s rating system goes by 0+, 6+, 9+, 12+, 14+, 16+ and 18+.
On the American side, Moon Knight is rated TV-14, the same rating as WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If…? and Hawkeye. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher are all rated TV-MA. America’s TV rating system goes by TV-Y, TV-Y7, TV-Y7-FV, TV-G, TV-PG, TV-14 and TV-MA.
From the start of production, the team wanted to push the boundaries of Marvel Studios’ tolerance for violence and horror with Moon Knight and not just tell a standard superhero story. “It was always a bit of a balancing act,” head writer Jeremy Slater said, “because right from the beginning, I sort of came in and a lot of my references…I kind of came in and said, ‘Look, people are sort of expecting Batman in a white palette swap, sort of beating up muggers in an alley.’ And you can definitely do that version of Moon Knight. But to me, it was sort of the least interesting version, because we’ve seen it so many times.”
“But I was like, ‘But let’s get as PG-13 as we possibly can,” Slater continued. “Like, let’s give people some goosebumps, let’s have some violence in there that you may have never seen before in an MCU thing.’ And Marvel was so supportive of that, they were so cool about it.”
Slater added that Moon Knight is “definitely still appropriate for all ages,” but that it would “bring some horror” and “some scary monsters” to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) when it premieres on March 30.
