10 Anime Finales That Don’t Resolve Anything | CBR

Many anime have satisfying finales, no matter what wacky adventures the characters and their stories go through. However, some anime end on an ambiguous note or have endings that barely resolve anything at all.

Some anime endings have the heroine or hero never choosing between their multiple love interests, like Kiss Him, Not Me! and Magic-Kyun! Renaissance. Other endings barely touch on any main plot points, like Yakitate!! Japan, Drugstore In Another World, and Komi Can’t Communicate. It can be frustrating for some fans to see an anime they enjoy end on a dissatisfying note.

10 Kiss Him, Not Me! Has The Heroine Indefinitely Delaying Choosing A Love Interest

Kiss Him, Not Me!’s heroine, Kae, goes on individual dates with every love interest in the final episode after they all confess their love to her. She promises to make a decision, but ends up inevitably delaying it. The reason for this delay is that one of her favorite anime characters might be resurrected in the upcoming second season. Though Kiss Him, Not Me!’s anime adaptation had Kae never ending up with anyone, the manga resolves this by her choosing Asuma Mutsumi. Both end up marrying and having a child together.

9 Monster Girl Doctor Ends With No Romantic Interests Being Chosen

Saphentite Neikes and Glenn Litbeit, Monster Girl Doctor

Monster Girl Doctor implies that Glenn and Sapphee, who met when they were children, are falling in love with each other. Sapphee gets jealous of Glenn working with other monster girls and Glenn often dissuades others from romancing him due to his position, but both have clear admiration for each other. Monster Girl Doctor’s anime adaptation left it ambiguous whether they end up together. However, the manga resolves this by having Glenn marry not just Sapphee, but also Arahnia and Tisalia.

8 Yakitate!! Japan Leaves Its Final Arc Without Turning The Big Bad Back To Normal

Yakitate!! Japan has many arcs involving baking tournaments, but the final arc, Yakitate!! 9 (Yakitate!! 25 in the manga adaptation), is disappointing to some fans. The finale of this arc also is the series finale. Though it ends with Azuma saving Pantasia from being controlled by Yuuichi Kirisaki, Yuuichi himself never turns back to normal for good.

There is a hope that Yuiichi will come to his senses after eating Azuma’s bread in the finale, but him turning back to his evil self spoils it. The manga, meanwhile, resolves this by having another arc focusing on the main cast getting Yuuichi back to normal and saving the rest of the world in the process.

7 Magic-Kyun! Renaissance Has The Heroine Not Ending Up With Anyone

Magic-Kyun! Renaissance has Kohana, the heroine, acquiring many potential love interests after helping them with personal issues. After Kohana goes into a coma from overusing her powers, all the love interests band together and save her life. Despite this grand gesture, Kohana never chooses anyone to romance. The finale of Magic-Kyun! Renaissance plays out like a normal end of the school year as if nothing had happened. This finale disappointed some viewers while others were happy that Kohana survives being in a coma and is still on good terms with everyone.

6 Rent-A-Girlfriend Doesn’t Resolve Any Romantic Tension

The end of Rent-A-Girlfriend shows that Chizuru and Kazuya are developing feelings together, but neither take any initiative to go beyond their rental relationship. Instead, the finale focuses on them dealing with Mami interfering in their lives and Kazuya rejecting Ruka’s advances so he could help Chizuru get out of a tough situation. Though Chizuru and Kazuya clear up misunderstandings between them, they still need to tell each other that they have romantic feelings for each other. They also need to stop the rental boyfriend-girlfriend relationship before they can date for real.

5 Monster Musume Ends With The Main Character Not Getting Married Yet

Monster Musume Girls

Marrying one of the monster girls is possible in Monster Musume. All of the main protagonist’s love interests start fighting over their affections. However, the anime adaptation ends with Kurusu not marrying anyone, but instead choosing to date all of them as prospective marriage partners.

Though it does help bring peace to their shared household, it does not solve the actual marriage problem. All Kurusu did is delay his decision until much later after dating all of them. Some Monster Musume viewers hope that Kurusu just marries all of them since he is happy with taking care of them and spending time with them.

4 Komi Can’t Communicate Has Komi Still Trying To Get 100 Friends

In Komi Can’t Communicate, one of Komi’s goals is to have 100 friends. Season 1 is only 12 episodes and Komi is nowhere close to completing her desired quota so far. Komi and Tadano also start having romantic feelings for each other. However, the upcoming second season of Komi Can’t Communicate might help boost the number of friends Komi has. Season 2’s trailer also supports this by introducing new characters, which could help her reach her goal. Some fans hope that the second season will expand on Komi and Tadano’s deepening relationship as well.

3 Drugstore In Another World Ends With No Real Resolution For Any Plot Point

Drugstore in another world

Drugstore In Another World ends with barely addressing any aspects of the main story. The only thing it addresses is how Reiji ends up in the fantasy world.

Reiji wishes that his tough, monotone life were easier and ends up in a new world. After discovering that he has skills perfect for medicine and potions, he starts running a pharmacy. This leads to the present-day events of the series. This is the only aspect of the main story that Drugstore In Another World addresses. It does nothing to further anyone else’s character development or the main story.

2 Blend S Ends With Maika & Dino Not Ending Up Together Yet

In Blend S, Maika and Dino develop romantic feelings for each other, but they do not end up together in the end. Past episodes foreshadow them getting together, so not doing so in the finale disappoints some fans. Instead, the last episode features Maika declaring her (platonic) love to all of her coworkers at Café Stile. Some viewers are glad that Blend S has a happy ending, but others wish there was more depth and substance. Others wish for Maika and Dino to get together and that the other characters have more time to shine in a future season.

1 Interviews With Monster Girls Has A Generic Ending With Little Resolution

Sakie and Tetsuo, Interviews With Monster Girls

Interviews With Monster Girls features monster girls as students and a fellow teacher at the school. There is some insight given into their lifestyles and how they adapt to living among humans, but the finale gives little resolution on any big character arcs. It also fails to resolve whether Tetsuo and Sakie will ever date each other. Past episodes imply that they have some romantic feelings for each other. Fans hope for a second season of Interviews With Monster Girls so that it can resolve anything the first season finale did not follow up with.
