The founding member of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the first TV series that spun off of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was pleased to let fans know that they can now watch the show’s entire run on Disney+.
Clark Gregg tweeted an image of the Disney+ interface with the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. banner centered, adding the text “Oh hey…” as well as the hashtag #AgentsOfSHIELD and a tag for the Disney+ Twitter. Gregg played Agent Phil Coulson through all seven seasons of the series, following the character’s apparent death in 2012’s Avengers.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. arrived on Disney+ on March 16, along with Marvel’s Defenders series, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher and The Defenders. The addition of those shows, which contain adult-oriented material, coincides with Disney+ adding new parental controls.
Created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuted on ABC in 2013 and concluded in 2020 after eight seasons. The series kicked off with Coulson’s return and followed him and the team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that he was assigned to lead, made up of new characters including Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), Skye/Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet), Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge).
As Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continued, its connections to the MCU began to fade, and by the time the show ended it was not entirely clear whether or not it was still part of the same canon. It also doesn’t quite share a universe with the Defenders series, which were created as Netflix originals. However, Gregg said in September that he still believes Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is canon for the MCU.
Now that Disney+ has collected the streaming rights to many of the MCU-inspired TV shows, there may be a possibility for some of the cast members to reprise their roles for appearances in new MCU projects. It is not yet known if there are plans for any of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actors; however, some have expressed a willingness to return, such as Henstridge as Simmons. Coulson’s origins in the first MCU films may give Gregg further opportunity to appear again, although his ending in the TV series may have been too definitive to explain a return for the character.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. can now be streamed exclusively on Disney+.
