Elden Ring has been a huge hit among first-time players and Soulslike veterans alike, with relative ease of accessibility but a steep late-game difficulty spike and a complex, multi-faceted character build system that lets players utilize the tools found in the game world. This helps gamers take the initiative and play exactly how they want. From magic to horseback combat to stealth, the game is incredibly varied in its approach to challenging encounters.
One of Elden Ring‘s many in-game mechanics and systems are spells, which have received an overhaul when compared to earlier games in FromSoftware’s back catalogue. Not only are spells viable for new players, but they’re also extremely powerful and almost essential for tackling some bosses without too much of a struggle. Spells are split into two categories, Incantations and Sorceries. It’s the former that’ll be tackled in this article.

Incantations and Sorceries are two different forms of spell casting in Elden Ring. The latter makes use of the Intelligence attribute, with more powerful Sorceries requiring a few levels in the Arcane attribute. Incantations scale off Faith and require points in Arcane for higher-level spells. They tend to focus more on buffing, debuffing and healing. There are also offensive Incantations and many of them are extremely powerful. Generally speaking, players will want to specialize in one of these two forms of spell casting if magic is a route they’d want to take.
Why New Players May Want To Avoid Incantations
When compared to Sorceries, Incantations can often be more situational and support-oriented, with spells to cleanse disease or to silence a player’s footsteps for a short amount of time. Generally, Incantations seem better suited to melee-caster hybrid classes than they do to pure casters, and many of the Sorceries in the game are better for overpowering the enemy with massive damage.
Still, when the situation calls for it, Incantations can leave the player feeling smart and well prepared. For example, healing at just the right time during combat, cleansing themselves of a harmful status ailment or applying a poison debuff to their blade to kill a boss can be extremely satisfying. The only requirement aside from level when casting Incantations is that the player needs to have their seal equipped and out, which can often leave them at a disadvantage if they rely on two weapons.
One of the biggest benefits of Incantations comes in the form of applying holy damage to weapons or dealing it outright. Many enemies in the game, especially the undead, are extremely vulnerable to holy damage, and their usage can often turn hard encounters into a breeze given the right spells, time and preparation. Still, if a player hasn’t done their homework on a particular enemy or struggles to apply situational incantations to encounters correctly, then Incantations can often leave them feeling frustrated and at a loss as to how next to proceed.
How To Best Use Elden Ring’s Incantations
When it comes to using Incantations, planning ahead is a must. Consider what enemies are likely to show up in a particular part of the game, and practice and experiment with how different damage types affect those enemies. Which enemies are weak to poison or holy damage? Is poison, blood rot or death common in the region? If so, it may be worth taking some form of status-cleansing Incantation. These are all considerations that are essential if a player is going to use Incantations effectively.
What Starting Classes Are Best For Incantations?
Generally speaking, any high-faith starting class is preferable for Incantation-based builds, though different classes often start with a different array of Incantations. With spells like Assassin’s Approach and Urgent Heal, the Confessor is the perfect starting class for players wanting to blend melee damage and casting, and take a more offensive, close-up approach to the game utilizing stealth and back-stabbing. If pure casting feels more appropriate, then The Prophet is the better choice, with access to offensive casting Incantations like Catch Flame and a stronger Heal. This starting class is also more suited to casting at range than it is to blending melee combat and spell casting.
Useful Elden Ring Incantations And How To Obtain Them
If a player takes their time to search the fire monk camps in Liurna, they’ll eventually stumble across the Incantation, Flame, Cleanse Me. This is an incredibly useful Incantation that deals a small amount of damage to the player in exchange for cleansing poison and scarlet rot buildup. While Cure Poison is the slightly safer option, Flame, Cleanse Me is arguably better for these types of ailments.
If the player wants an area of effect damaging Incantation, there are plenty on offer, but the best early-game one lies in Dragonfire, which can be found in the Church of Dragon Communion in Limgrave. However, it costs one Dragon Heart to purchase — a steep price even for such a powerful Incantation. It also requires a minimum of 12 in the Arcane attribute, but it scales with Faith and does a reasonable amount of fire damage to a large number of enemies in a cone.
Heal is an essential Incantation for providing a player and their allies some quick relief during particularly intense combat encounters. Prophets start with Heal, so picking a Prophet to start may be an alluring prospect. However, if the Confessor is more favorable, then Heal can easily be purchased from an NPC named Brother Corhyn.
