Fans Absolutely Love Ms. Marvel’s First Poster – Here’s the Comic Art It Homages

In addition to her iconic costume, the official poster for Ms. Marvel‘s Disney+ series is something straight out of Marvel’s comic panels.

Following the release of the series’ first official trailer, fans also praised the poster that was released along with it, which features Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) in costume observing the night lights of Manhattan atop a street light, a direct reference to the cover of Ms. Marvel #5. Written by G. Willow Wilson with cover art by artist Adrian Alphona, Ms. Marvel #5 was published by Marvel Comics in 2014.

Kamala Khan can be seen sitting atop a street lamp in the official trailer for the series as well, which showcases the hero out of her costume, providing a firsthand look at Kamala’s inner circle of friends and family from the comics, including parents Yusuf and Muneeba, older brother Amir, high school best friends Bruno and Nakia, and bully-turned-future friend Zoe. Other notable locations include the Circle Q, a Jersey City quick-mart and hangout joint where Bruno works part-time.

While some fans praised the series’ promotional art, others were disappointed by the drastic alteration of Kamala’s superhuman abilities depicted in the trailer. Instead of gaining polymorphic powers through the Terrigen Mist, Kamala’s Inhuman origin was replaced with the power to create cosmic energy constructs through her signature golden arm bracelet.

The alteration to the hero’s powers was teased in leaked promotional merchandise that showed Ms. Marvel wielding a crystalized fist in place of her traditional embiggened punch. This raised questions on whether the Marvel Cinematic Universe would address the existence of the Inhumans species that previously appeared in both Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the poorly received Inhumans show. However, a leaked episode title for Ms. Marvel suggested that Inhumans member Lockjaw may appear, given her comic connection to the Royal Family’s teleporting dog.

Created by G. Willow Wilson and Sana Amanat, Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel has since become one of Marvel’s most popular new characters, appearing in major comic storylines and even becoming leader of the Champions superhero team. She has previously been adapted into various cartoons like Avengers Assemble and Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors, as well as the 2020 Marvel’s Avengers video game. Vellani will also reprise her role as Kamala for 2023’s The Marvels alongside Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau.

Ms. Marvel premieres on Disney+ June 8.
