When fans tuned into Sony’s March 2022 State of Play, there was a lot of excitement regarding new game announcements. There were numerous rumors of a dinosaur game, and many thought it could be the return of one of PlayStation’s classic franchises, Dino Crisis. Unfortunately, Exoprimals shares nothing with Capcom‘s survival horror experience. However, another game could be the answer fans are looking for.
Instinction is developer Hashbane’s foray into the world of prehistoric exploration and combat. The game’s trailers depict a mix of environments, with the player exploring foggy forests and ruined temples, all the while being chased by a variety of different dinosaurs. The elements shown are reminiscent of Dino Crisis in many ways.
Dino Crisis was released for the PlayStation in 1999 and was a survival horror experience. The game was heavily reminiscent of Resident Evil, with the player having limited inventory slots and having to complete many puzzles to progress. There were two sequels, with each game slowly moving further away from the original concept and focusing more on the sci-fi aspect. The series never really gained success in later console generations and slowly faded into obscurity, but it still has a loyal fanbase that longs for a new game. Instinction appears to be taking some hints from the original, while also fine-tuning its gameplay to fit modern standards.
Instinction‘s focus on the survival horror aspect makes sense in several ways, one of the most important being the actual threat of the dinosaurs. In reality, dinosaurs are more of a danger to an individual than they are to an army with access to modern technology. Placing the player in an environment with limited access to items makes even the smaller dinosaurs a threat and requires constant resource management. The horror aspect can also make use of the tendency for many carnivorous dinosaurs to be ambush hunters relying on surprise to take their prey.
Ideally, the game will allow players to focus on more than just combat, and there are hints that there will be a mix of environmental puzzles to complete. This, combined with the layered story, will give players a variety of experiences to enjoy and will keep them invested. One of the reasons Dino Crisis succeeded was that it recognized that constantly fighting and being able to counter attacks easily removes the threat of the creatures. Players needed to pick their battles and rarely had access to the kinds of weapons that allowed them to battle the larger animals. They also knew to make use of the environment to increase tension.
Instinction has large shoes to fill, but the opportunity is there for fans who are waiting for something similar to their old favorites. Hopefully, the game learns from the mistakes of its contemporaries and adapts them to fit the abilities of the current tech. There’s plenty to explore in the prehistoric world and it is clear that fans are waiting for the chance. Hopefully, players will be able to experience this world sometime in September 2022.
