10 Ways Joseph Joestar Grew Up Over The Course Of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

Joseph Joestar was the main character of Battle Tendency, but he was also a significant character in Stardust Crusaders and a minor character in Diamond Is Unbreakable. Since Joseph has been in multiple parts of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, fans were able to watch him grow up and mature.

Of course, maturity is expected to come with age, but the events Joseph endured also forced him to grow up throughout the story. From Battle Tendency through Diamond Is Unbreakable, Joseph Joestar has undergone many changes but he’s still retained the same goofy and boastful traits that fans remember from his introduction.

10 Joseph Isn’t As Hot-Headed Anymore

In Battle Tendency, Joseph rolled onto the scene and was introduced as hot-headed and never one to back down from a fight. He was quick to assault someone if they even slightly provoked him. Consequently, he was thrown in jail seven times and got expelled from school for getting into a brawl.

Joseph has calmed down significantly in Stardust Crusaders, but he’s still impatient and quick to anger. The difference is that he no longer gets into a fight before assessing if it’s worth it or not.

9 Joseph Learned Valuable Lessons From His Battles Against Wamuu & Esidisi

Two of the most formidable enemies in the series were Wamuu and Esidisi. They weren’t unbelievably overpowered, but they were stronger than most of the other enemies in the series at that point. To remove the poisoned rings that they placed inside his body, Joseph underwent intense Hamon training under the guidance of Lisa Lisa.

The fights against Esidisi and Wammu taught Joseph two valuable lessons. The battle against Esidisi showed that Joseph could outsmart him for quite some time, but Joseph needed to be more vigilant. The fight against Wamuu, on the other hand, showed the value of mutual respect between opponents.

8 Joseph Was Forced To Work Hard During Hamon Training

Joseph was pretty upfront about his disregard for authority and disdain for hard work. He even admitted that the phrases he hates the most are “hard work” and “work hard.” However, during his Hamon training under Lisa Lisa, Joseph was forced to respect her as an authority figure.

He was also forced to work hard and put in the effort to become stronger in time to defeat the Pillar Men. After Battle Tendency, Joseph isn’t quite as lazy anymore because of the work ethic whipped into him during the training.

7 Joseph Became Even More Strategic & Smart In Battle

After Battle Tendency, Joseph realized many valuable lessons about approaching a fight, thinking on his feet in the middle of a brawl, and the importance of remaining vigilant. Joseph isn’t as outright or boisterous in his approaches in Stardust Crusaders. He’s still excellent at strategizing on his feet, but he isn’t as obvious.

When the parasitic stand, Empress, attached itself to him, Joseph showed how quickly he could turn a situation around. Though he was clumsy during most of the fight, he purposely knocked over pots to make a map of the city out of the debris with Hermit Purple’s spirit photography. He subtlety located a barrel of coal tar and dunked the Empress into it, defeating the stand almost instantly.

6 Joseph Doesn’t Taunt His Opponents As Frequently

Some of the funniest scenes from Battle Tendency are the ones where Joseph taunts his opponents. He would purposely try to get under their skin as a distraction from what he had under his sleeve. However, in Stardust Crusaders, he doesn’t taunt his opponents as much.

Though Joseph is still scheming and clever in part two, he doesn’t waste time taunting his opponents. One of the most common taunts was guessing his opponent’s next word. Though he still used it in part three, it was only used once or twice. Joseph realized that he didn’t have to taunt his opponents to get one over on them. It makes him more unpredictable when he doesn’t mock them.

5 Joseph Realized He Can’t Run Away When Things Get Rough

One of the running gags that came out of part two was Joseph’s tendency to run away from a battle whenever it didn’t go as planned. He did it when Straizo rose from the ground after a barrage of bullets from Joseph’s Tommy gun. He did it again when Kars became the ultimate life form. Most of the time, he’s running away because he has another plan in mind.

However, running away is unacceptable no matter the circumstance. Joseph eventually realized this, so in Stardust Crusaders, he opted for more hands-on, straightforward approaches to defeat an opponent with whatever he had in front of him. Joseph is still resourceful, but he doesn’t have to run away to prove it.

4 Joseph Realized The Importance Of The Joestar Name

Perhaps what Joseph was missing during part two was a robust understanding of what it means to be a Joestar. However, in part three, Joseph fully understood the implications of the Joestars’ long connection to DIO and why it was so important to eradicate the vampire.

Though this understanding was present before Holy became afflicted by her own Stand, it seems that his daughter falling terribly ill due to DIO’s reawakening cemented this reality for him. In part two, he didn’t fully understand the long lineage of the Joestar name, but by part three, he was determined to do right by his family name.

3 Joseph Learned A Lot After The Loss Of Caesar

One of the most heart-wrenching scenes from Battle Tendency was when Joseph realized Caesar had been crushed to death after fighting Wamuu. Every fan of Jojo’s can recall the scene where Joseph called out Caesar’s name with tears in his eyes.

The two had gotten into a fight beforehand, so Caesar went into the abandoned mansion where the Pillar Men were hiding all by himself. Joseph realized how much he appreciated Caesar only after he was gone. Joseph learned the importance of appreciating those around him before it was too late, and it ultimately changed his view on grief and loss.

2 Joseph Reminisced At The End Of Stardust Crusaders

When Joseph learned that Iggy and Avdol died, he was visibly shaken. However, the group had a high-stakes battle against DIO ahead of them, so he couldn’t let his grief afflict him too greatly at that moment. Then, the group lost Kakyoin as well.

If Joseph learned how to process grief at the end of Battle Tendency, then Stardust Crusaders was where he proved it. After the battle was over, he and Jotaro paid their comrades one final moment of silence. There was no grandiose display of emotions but rather a peaceful scene of the two looking out onto the shore as they remember their lost friends.

1 Joseph Tried To Be A Mentor To Jotaro

Though Joseph was certainly not an outstanding mentor, he did try to teach Jotaro a lot during their journey around the world. Joseph, after all, was the one who enlightened Jotaro to the reality of Stands, DIO, and the true implications of the Joestar lineage.

Though Jotaro learned a lot from his grandfather, he doesn’t respect him too much. During the journey to Egypt, Jotaro wasn’t too amused with Joseph’s gaffes and uncanny ability to crash a plane. Additionally, Joseph really proved that he wasn’t the best role model when it was revealed that he cheated on Suzi Q with Tomoko Higashikata, resulting in the birth of Josuke.
