Spider-Man 3 star Topher Grace tried to make a Venom: Let There Be Carnage-themed advert for his series Home Economics.
Grace, who played Eddie Brock/Venom in Spider-Man 3, discussed his Venom 2/Home Economics promo pitch during a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. “I actually had this idea. We couldn’t make it work as an ad,” he explained. “Because Home Economics premiered literally like, one day from when Venom 2 was gonna premiere. And I was like, ‘We should do an ad.’ They just couldn’t — It was, like, Sony and Disney, and they couldn’t figure it out.”
The actor went on to describe the proposed advert, which would’ve poked fun at his history with the Venom character. “[A]ll of our characters on Home Economics were sitting watching the trailer for Venom 2… I’m like, ‘Who even is this guy?’,” explained Grace. “They go, ‘Oh, he’s so jacked. He looks great.’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know, I don’t know.’ Like, ‘Who is Tom Hardy?’ And they’re like, ‘You know, Mad Max and, like, Dunkirk. I’m like, ‘Yeah, but is he, like, a good actor?’ And they all say, ‘Yeah, he’s been nominated for an Academy Award.’ I’m like, ‘Okay, but, like, comic book villain?’ And they’re like, ‘Bane, yeah. He’s, like, amazing!'”
Grace’s portrayal of Eddie Brock in 2007’s Spider-Man 3 proved polarizing, with many fans arguing that Grace and co-writer/director Sam Raimi failed to do the iconic villain justice. The star was later replaced by English actor Tom Hardy for 2018’s Venom, which rebooted the character and performed well enough at the box office to earn a sequel: Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
While 2021’s other major Spider-Man-themed release, Spider-Man: No Way Home, saw the return of several villains from the Raimi films, the Grace incarnation of Venom wasn’t among them. When asked about his involvement in the movie ahead of its release, the actor nevertheless joked that he would indeed appear, before sharing a comical faux-synopsis of Spider-Man: No Way Home’s plot centered around his version of Venom.
Unlike Grace, Hardy would go on to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, making a brief cameo as Eddie Brock during one of the film’s post-credit scenes. Although this scene is largely unrelated to the wider plot of the film, it’s notable for setting up the potential introduction of Venom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
