Obi-Wan Kenobi Debuts First Images of Ewan McGregor’s Star Wars Return

The first series of images of Ewan McGregor back in his Jedi robes for the Disney+ show Obi-Wan Kenobi have been released to the galaxy.

The pictures from Entertainment Weekly show a bearded McGregor in a series of locations, both new and old. Kenobi is seen sitting in his cavernous but sparse home on Tatooine, his base for keeping a watchful eye over Luke Skywalker. Another photo focuses on Kenobi’s profile against the background of new planet Daiyu, described as having a “Hong Kong feel to it” by writer Joby Harold. The magazine cover keeps it simple and features the Jedi Master with his lightsaber in hand.

Other photos released feature Moses Ingram’s villain, the Inquisitor Reva. The Inquisitors are Force-sensitive hunters sent out by the Empire to track down and kill any Jedi that survived the murderous Order 66. Ingram said her character shares a “common, dark-sided goal” with the Grand Inquisitor and Darth Vader. “They’re on the same team.”

In addition to McGregor and Ingram, Obi-Wan Kenobi stars Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker and Joel Edgerton as Luke Skywalker’s uncle, Owen Lars. Rupert Friend was confirmed as joining the cast in March 2021 and at the time of writing, his role has yet to be officially revealed, although rumors suggest he’ll play the Grand Inquisitor. Other actors confirmed for the show include Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, and Sung Kang. John Williams is also confirmed to have written a musical theme for Obi-Wan Kenobi, making this his first venture into Star Wars TV shows after scoring all nine of the mainline Skywalker Saga movies.

McGregor last played the role of Kenobi in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith, which saw the end of the Republic and the rise of the Empire in its place. It also saw the birth of Darth Vader after a confrontation on the fiery planet Mustafar found Kenobi victorious over his fallen ex-Padawan Anakin Skywalker. McGregor spoke about the experience of working with Christensen again, saying, “I think it’s no secret that Hayden Christensen comes back and we got to play scenes together again as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker and it was great to work with him again.” As for the fans, McGregor thinks they’ll enjoy the show. “I think it’s really going to satisfy Star Wars fans,” he said.

Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres on Disney+ on May 25.
