The Batman Director Wants Hush in a Sequel | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Batman, now in theaters.

The Batman co-writer/director Matt Reeves further fueled speculation that Hush could appear in the DC Film’s sequel.

The bandage-faced villain came up when Reeves was asked which character from the comics he’d most like to incorporate into his burgeoning Bat-verse, in a Q&A with fans hosted by Twitter Movies. “I think Hush is a really interesting one to do. I’ll choose Hush,” replied Reeves. “That doesn’t mean that the next [movie villain] will be Hush. I just want to say, there are so many.”

Despite this, Reeves was quick to clarify that fans shouldn’t take his answer as confirmation that Hush will appear in The Batman‘s sequel. “[W]hat we would do next, what we’re going to do next if we have that opportunity, it’s still in the planning stages and I have a lot of ideas. So please don’t latch onto this and say, ‘Hey, they’re doing the Hush movie!'” said Reeves.

In the comics, Hush is the alter-ego of Doctor Thomas “Tommy” Elliot, a brilliant surgeon and friend of Bruce Wayne since childhood. Like Bruce, Tommy was born into an immensely wealthy family but his abusive father and frail mother ensured his upbringing was decidedly less than idyllic. Tommy eventually attempted to murder his parents to inherit their fortune, only for Thomas Wayne to save their lives — foiling his plans. Years later, Tommy seeks revenge on Bruce for his father’s actions, as well as for living the life he craved for himself.

The Batman suggests a different origin for Hush, although one that’s still linked to Bruce and his father. A key scene in the film references a reporter named Edward Elliot whose investigation into the Wayne family’s history ends up getting him killed. While nothing is confirmed, fans believe Edward Elliot to be Tommy’s father in the world of The Batman and that his death will ultimately motivate the villain to assume the mantle of Hush. A photo of Thomas Wayne defaced with the word ‘HUSH’ is also shown during this scene, further underlining Edward’s connection to Tommy.

Hush isn’t the only major Bat-villain teased in The Batman. One of the movie’s final scenes introduces Barry Keoghan as an unnamed Arkham inmate whose creepy laugh and rictus-like facial scars have fans believing him to be The Joker. Reeves recently revealed that he briefly considered cutting Keoghan’s cameo, only to relent after test audiences responded strongly to it. “[The cameo scene] changed people’s response to the very ending of the movie,” he recalled, in a recent interview. “To see that Gotham was still Gotham, and that Batman really didn’t have a choice. He has to keep doing what he’s gonna do.”
