WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 2, Episode 6, “Tried and True,” which aired Tuesday, March 1, on The CW.
Season 2 of Superman & Lois has offered several new developments for Lana Lang Cushing’s life, but a tease seems to indicate that bigger changes might await her. Interestingly enough, the show seems to reference a famous storyline in the comics that saw Lana gaining powers and taking on the superhero mantle of Superwoman. Could audiences get the chance to see Lana fly right next to her childhood best friend in red and blue?
In the new season of the CW drama, Lana (played by Emmanuelle Chriqui) is seen planning to overthrow Smallville’s current corrupt mayor, George Dean, by aiding a new mayoral candidate to run against him. When the new candidate decides to quit early in the campaign, Lana decides to run herself as the new candidate against Dean. However, this leads to Lana having to deal with Dean’s shady games as he tries to dissuade her from running. If that wasn’t enough, during her daughter’s quinceañera, it is revealed that Lana’s husband, Kyle, had an affair with another woman, which completely devastates her. After discovering more information about the affair, Lana decides to ask Kyle to move out so she can figure out what is best for their family. Shockingly, the most intriguing surprise about Lana in the latest episode is something she is not even aware of.
In the most recent episode, viewers got the chance to get a peek at Bizarro’s origin story. Most surprisingly, it is revealed that in Bizarro’s world, Lana has powers similar to that of Superman, wearing a costume that looks like those that Supermen of America wear, and actually works for that world’s Ally Allston. When Bizarro tried to steal Ally’s pendant, he had to go through Lana first, who was definitely able to go head to head with him.
While Bizarro was eventually able to get to Ally, viewers never saw what actually happened to her, leaving the door open for the return of this “bizarre” version of Lana. Of course, much like with many other storylines on the show, this one seems to be also inspired by the source material.
In the comics, Lana Lang has received super-powers several times before but it was the latest story arc that was the most significant for the character and is referenced here. In 2016, Lana Lang starred in a new “Superwoman” comic book series, where she adventured as the eponymous heroine after receiving super-powers from an alternate version of Superman.
In the comic book series, Lana sported a costume similar to that of “bizarre” Lana from the show. As Superwoman, she partnered with Lois Lane, John Henry Irons, and Natasha Irons, and she battled several villains, including a Bizarro-like version of Superwoman, known as Bizarress. While at the end of the series Lana lost her powers, her adventures definitely brought her closer together with the Super family and established her as a legitimate hero.
It would be interesting to see if the tease ends up leading to a superheroic journey for the main version of Lana in future seasons or if it was just used as an easter egg for DC fans. One thing is for sure, Superman & Lois‘ writers have plenty of established content at their disposal to get inspired by if they decide to push the character in that direction.
