Riverdale’s 101st Episode Finally Resolves Season 5’s Explosive Cliffhanger

The CW has released the official synopsis for the 101st episode of Riverdale, “Chapter One Hundred and One: UNBELIEVABLE,” which delves into the aftermath of the Archie Comics-based drama’s explosive Season 5 finale.

Riverdale Season 5 ended on Oct. 6, 2021 with “Chapter Ninety-Five: Riverdale: RIP (?).” That episode concluded with Archie Andrews (K.J. Apa) and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) sharing an intimate moment in the former’s bedroom — which was cut short when Archie discovered a ticking bomb underneath his bed. The episode soon made it clear that the bomb was planted by Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos), who could be seen departing Riverdale as Archie’s house went up in flames in the distance.

However, Riverdale did not immediately resolve this cliffhanger when it returned for Season 6 the following month. Rather, Riverdale Season 6 began with the five-episode “Rivervale” event, which premiered on Nov. 16, 2021 with “Chapter Ninety-Six: Welcome to Rivervale” and concluded on Dec. 14, 2021 with “Chapter One Hundred: The Jughead Paradox.” The supernatural, horror-tinged event took place in a pocket universe branching off from the main Riverdale universe.

That said, “The Jughead Paradox” did tie back into “Riverdale: RIP (?),” implying that the version of Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) who resides in Rivervale managed to contact the version of Betty who resides in the prime universe in order to warn her about the bomb. “The Jughead Paradox” ended on the prime universe’s version of Jughead, who was in Archie’s garage when the bomb went off, shattering the windows around him and blowing out his ears.

“UNBELIEVABLE” is set to air on The CW on Sunday, March 20 as the sixth episode of Riverdale Season 6. Its official synopsis affirms that Archie and Betty did indeed survive the explosion. Meanwhile, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) is forced grapple with the fact that the bombing was most likely her father’s doing — though, apparently, Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) may have been indirectly involved as well.

The full synopsis for “Chapter One Hundred and One: UNBELIEVABLE” reads as follows:

THE AFTERMATH — As news begins to spread about the bombing at the Andrew’s home, Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) begin to deal with mysterious side effects from the explosion. Elsewhere, Veronica (Camila Mendes) spirals after learning that Hiram may have been involved, and Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) is consumed with guilt when she believes she may have had a hand in the explosion. Mädchen Amick, Casey Cott, Vanessa Morgan, Charles Melton, Erinn Westbrook and Drew Ray Tanner also star. James DeWille wrote and directed the episode (#606). Original airdate 3/20/2021.

Riverdale Season 6 returns to The CW on Sunday, March 20 at 8 p.m. ET.
