10 Batman Villains Who Were Justified | CBR

Batman is one of comics’ greatest heroes, so it makes sense that he has some of the best villains ever created. From the gimmicky baddies of yesteryear to the more hard-edged ones of today, the Dark Knight’s rogues are icons who stand tall against the greatest villains in the medium.

Many of Batman’s foes are monsters, but that doesn’t mean that their actions are totally unjustifiable. Some of the Caped Crusader’s most well known foes have genuinely good reasons behind their supposed evil. While they might not exactly stand up in court, that doesn’t make them any less justified.

10 KGBeast Was Doing His Job For A Regime That Would’ve Punished Him And His Family

A Cold War era KGB assassin, KGBeast first began battling Batman in the mid ’80s. This makes him unequivocally evil, but if one knows anything about the history of the KGB, it’s plain to see he didn’t have much choice. Failure at the level Anatolu worked at would have meant death when he came home, both for him and his family. One didn’t say no to the KGB, so KGBeast’s choices were limited. He did what he was told and tried his best. That said, he definitely had no qualms about what he did.

9 Harley Quinn’s Acts As A Villain Weren’t Her Fault

Harley Quinn Smiling Old Costume

Harley Quinn has reformed, but she was the Joker’s right hand woman for a long time. However, calling her that makes light of the actual situation she found herself in. Being Joker’s “right hand” implies choice, but Harley Quinn never had one to begin with. She was manipulated from the word go by the Joker, loved and abused into doing his bidding. The Joker knew exactly how to get her to do whatever he wanted. Her complicity in her actions during those years was just about nil. That was enough to satisfy Batman, who has since worked with her many times.

8 Red Hood Wasn’t Wrong About How Batman Should Have Handled The Joker

Jason Todd’s return to life as the Red Hood was a huge surprise to everyone, especially Batman. The next surprise was the fact he came back as a villain, taking over the Gotham underworld in order to get his revenge on the Joker and Batman alike. Looking at his motivation for the whole thing, though, it’s hard to say he was wrong.

Red Hood wanting Batman to have killed the Joker for what he did is essentially what a court of law would have done in the same circumstances, saving thousands of lives in the process. Red Hood’s hatred of both his killer and his mentor make sense when looked at from the perspective of innocent lives lost.

7 Catwoman’s Thievery Kept Her Alive

Catwoman and Batman’s flirtations have blossomed into love, but their relationship had a rather antagonistic edge to it for ages. Batman couldn’t accept her stealing, but for Catwoman, it was the only thing that kept her alive for years. She had no family or inheritance; she had to take care of herself and did so through theft.

Catwoman only stole from those who were wealthy – which is still obviously illegal, but more moral than a common mugger. It’s hard to call Selina evil, as her crimes didn’t hurt anyone and she only fought against people to make sure she could get away. She’s since become one of DC’s best reformed heroes, accepted by everyone who knows she changed her spots.

6 Bane Is Just Doing What He Knows

Bane Breaks Batmans Back.

Bane is one of Batman’s greatest foes. On the surface, his actions might seem like they have no justification whatsoever. Look a little deeper and who he is makes complete sense. Bane was sentenced to Santa Prisca’s most brutal prison to answer for his father’s crimes as a child.

His life was defined by a constant struggle to stay alive and the only lessons he learned were terrible ones. Bane was molded by an environment of the most horrible depravity. He had to be tougher, smarter, and more brutal than the next person to thrive. Bane has only ever known one way of living.

5 Penguin’s Deformities Left Him Few Options Other Than Crime

Penguin has been battling Batman for a long time. He’s had a tough life, driven out of his home at a young age because of his looks. At that point, he only two choices – joining a circus as a sideshow and dealing with the derision of the crowds or a life of crime in order wrestle back the respect his body prevented him from having.

Penguin chose a life that isn’t legal, but one that makes sense for him. He was born in an important family and shunned because of how he looked. Instead of accepting the abuse that would have been heaped upon him, he chose a life that allowed him to be who he is with pride.

4 Two-Face Is Right About The Duality Of Our World

Two-Face flipping a coin

Harvey Dent was a good man destroyed by a bad day, attacked in court and horribly scarred. Since then, he’s been Two-Face, obsessed with the duality of the world. He’s struggled with his sanity for years, but in a lot of ways, it’s hard to say that he’s wrong.

The nature of reality is random, blessing some with amazing luck and others with the worst lives imaginable for no other reason than a fluke of birth. Two-Face’s way of doing things seems cruel, but it’s no more cruel than what the world does to every human being. Two-Face may be wrong about the way he does things, but he’s not wrong about the world.

3 Ra’s al Ghul Isn’t Wrong About Humanity’s Effect On The World

Ra's al Ghul Stands Proud.

Ra’s al Ghul has been world shaking plans for years in order to thin out the human population. Ra’s is all about destroying the vast majority of humanity in order to save the planet from their actions. While one can definitely argue with al Ghul’s methods, he’s not wrong at all. Humanity’s disregard for the natural world for profit has endangered the planet and shows no sign of getting any better.

Ra’s al Ghul has been alive for centuries, so he has an understanding that most of humanity won’t. He’s watched humans do what they do for hundreds of years and fully believe that change often needs to be forced. Perhaps not to the extremes Ra’s al Ghul goes to, though.

2 Poison Ivy Is Just As Right As Ra’s al Ghul

Poison Ivy Justice league United Cover

Poison Ivy has spent years as an eco-terrorist, but much like al Ghul, she’s undeniably right about humanity’s effect on the world of flora. Humans do not care about nature. Ivy’s mania for destroying cities in order for plants to get their habitats back is extreme, but not entirely wrong. As usual, humanity’s own action have proved Poison Ivy right.

While she’s not always a “kill all humans” type of person and has softened in recent years, one can’t dispute how right she is about how humans have treated the plant world. Poison Ivy wants the world that grows to have a defense against the world of man, which is a laudable goal.

1 Mr. Freeze Just Wanted To Save His Wife

super-villain-mr-freeze

Mr. Freeze is easily one of Batman’s most tragic villains. In an effort to save his wife, Dr. Victor Fries damned himself to living in his cold suit, unable to touch the world or feel the warmth of the sun. He commits crime in order to fund trying to cure his wife and will stop at nothing to get her back in his life.

The tragedy that defines Freeze’s life is undeniable. Mr. Freeze doesn’t commit crime for personal aggrandizement. He does it so he can have the love of his life back. He eventually succeeded and she spurned him, making the whole thing that much worse for him.
