How Star Trek: Picard Brings Back Whoopi Goldberg’s Guinan | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard Season 2, Episode 1, “The Star Gazer,” streaming now on Paramount+.

Just like its preceding season, Star Trek: Picard has brought plenty of familiar faces to reunite with Jean-Luc Picard since the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation and its subsequent continuation films. This time around, Picard reconnects with his old friend Guinan, the former bartender of the USS Enterprise-D’s lounge Ten Forward, a character who hasn’t been seen since 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis. And just as wise as ever, the El-Aurian bartender appears just in time to offer some salient advice to Picard when the retired admiral faces his own existential crisis that strikes close to home.

Picard has gained a new lease on life by having his consciousness transferred into a synthetic body to save him from a terminal neurological condition. But the legendary Starfleet officer is troubled at home, balancing his life as the caretaker of the Picard family vineyards in France and as the chancellor of Starfleet Academy in San Francisco. Throughout this, Picard can’t shake the feeling that he has forsaken things like serious romance and family, making him alone and lonely as he progresses through his twilight years. In the face of this intense self-reflection, Picard recalls troubled memories from his childhood, hinting at why he may have joined Starfleet in the first place.

Never one to directly face his own insecurities, Picard instead decides to take an impromptu detour to Guinan’s new Ten Forward location at a back alley bar in Los Angeles to hand-deliver a bottle of Chateau Picard, his family’s signature wine. As Guinan greets her old friend, she immediately senses something is wrong with him, challenging Picard to look back on the roads not traveled and unresolved personal issues that continue to reside within all his life, with Picard stopping just short of revealing to Guinan what has really been troubling him recently.

As the Enterprise-D’s bartender, Guinan has offered timely counsel to many of TNG‘s main characters when they’ve desperately needed the advice. Surviving for centuries, Guinan helped advise Picard and Riker on how to deal with the Borg Collective when they faced the techno-organic empire in a heated confrontation. She also provided insight on the reality-bending Nexus in the 1994 film Star Trek Generations. And given that Picard Season 2 revolves around time-travel, Guinan may resurface as Picard and his friends travel back to the past, continuing her conversation with her friend centuries before their interaction at the start of the season.

Picard is not the only character who has gone through changes, with Guinan allowing herself to age to maintain the illusion of mortality as she continues to live among her human friends and clientele. This offers a contrast to Picard’s own unease about living alone, with Picard projecting deep-seated insecurity while Guinan remains a picture of confidence and self-acceptance that helps others find their way when they need her guidance the most.

Taken just at face value, Guinan’s brief appearance in the Picard Season 2 premiere feels like a throwaway cameo to further tie the new series to the TNG era. However, Guinan has always been a character that presents just enough information and friendly prodding to set them on the right path. That said, Guinan does have a secret history with Q and, with the omnipotent frenemy returning, Guinan may resurface later in the season to continue her vendetta with him.

Created by Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kirsten Beyer and Alex Kurtzman, Star Trek: Picard releases new episodes Thursdays on Paramount+.
