WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 11, Episode 10, “New Haunts,” which aired Sunday, Feb. 27 on AMC.
The Walking Dead has always given its characters trademark weapons. In fact, they’re often the most recognizable part of their characters. Rick had his Colt Python, Daryl still has his crossbow and the most iconic of all was probably Michonne’s katana. However, as deadly as those weapons were, the unconventional weapons have provided viewers with the most entertaining walker kills.
Daryl went full Ghost Rider when he killed three walkers with a chain, which might be why viewers want Norman Reedus to play Ghost Rider. Carol used fireworks to blow up tons of walkers at Terminus. There was the time Rick and Michonne attached a clothesline between two cars and decapitated dozens of walkers simultaneously. “New Haunts” topped all of those makeshift weapons because Rosita might have had the most savage walker kill in The Walking Dead history.
After finishing off an unexpectedly productive Reaper arc and making contact with the Commonwealth during the midseason opener, the Virginia-based survivors split into two groups. One group headlined by Maggie and Aaron stayed in Alexandria to try and rebuild. The other group — which included Daryl, Carol and Rosita — went off to see what the Commonwealth had to offer. “New Haunts” featured the latter group as they acclimated into their new roles as citizens of the Commonwealth.
Commonwealth officials assigned the new citizens a job based on their pre- and post-apocalypse experience. Yumiko became a Commonwealth lawyer and Carol was a baker, while Daryl and Rosita became soldiers. The idea was to give everybody a purpose, but some of them acclimated better than others. The episode showed Carol utilizing her snooping skills that were hinted at in the Season 11B trailer as she tried to help Ezekiel get his surgery. And Daryl had some difficulty adjusting to being part of Mercer’s team, but his struggles were overshadowed by Rosita’s big moment.
During a training exercise, Mercer paired Daryl and Rosita with random trainees. The goal was for the teams of two to work as a team and clear a course of walkers. But there was a catch: each group only got one knife, so the teammates had to work together and watch each other’s backs. While Daryl had problems working with his teammate, Rosita and her teammate quickly and safely cleared the course — and along the way, she proved her savage resourcefulness.
A walker attacked Rosita while her teammate had the knife, so she had to improvise a weapon. After knocking the walker down, she proceeded to pull its leg off and stab it with its own cracked femur. While that specific femur probably won’t be used to kill any more walkers, it definitely deserves its place in the list of all-time great Walking Dead weapons. Taking out a walker with its own appendage proved, once again, how Rosita has taken over Michonne’s role as the series’ female badass. It also showed her resourcefulness as a leader — even being willing to embrace the Commonwealth.
