Can Moon Knight Beat Batman? & 9 Other Questions, Answered | CBR

Moon Knight is a complicated character with a confusing history in Marvel Comics. He’s often compared to Batman, and there’s good reason for that given Moon Knight’s motif, costuming, and wealth. However, Nighthawk is already Marvel’s resident Batman-alike, and Moon Knight has more differences than similarities to Batman.

With the upcoming Moon Knight Disney Plus series starring Oscar Isaac, more people than ever before want to learn about the eponymous character. He was always a fairly popular Marvel Comics character with an ongoing series since his introduction. Consequently, there’s a lot of lore to comb through and a lot of questions to be answered.

10 Can Moon Knight Beat Batman?

This one is hard to answer. At one point, Moon Knight had powers tied to the phases of the moon, including super strength and the ability to sap one’s life force through touch. However, he’s since lost these powers. He also has a personality called Buck Lime that allows him to find ways to mimic the abilities and equipment of other heroes, and there is the personality of Jake Lockley who’s become a viciously brutal fighter more likely to maim his enemies.

Moon Knight has also stated that his mind has been altered by Khonshu to be something different than strictly human. What exactly this means remains unclear. There’s also the recent battle with the Avengers in which Moon Knight was able to steal Ghost Rider’s Spirit of Vengeance, Iron Fist’s chi powers, and Mjolnir from Thor. All of this is to say that Moon Knight could beat Batman depending on the personality in charge, the phase of the moon, and if Khonshu wills it.

9 Was Moon Knight Inspired By Batman?

There’s no way that Batman wasn’t some measure of inspiration for Moon Knight. However, Batman doesn’t have a patent on the gritty noir-style hero aesthetic, and he definitely wasn’t the first one who adopted it. Furthermore, Batman was a far more light-hearted character when Moon Knight first appeared in 1975. Plus, when Moon Knight first appeared, he was presented as a sort of kooky monster hunter.

As Moon Knight has developed, the differences between him and Batman have become starker. Moon Knight is, in many ways, a far more brutal and dark character than Batman. Between his methods, the side effects of his dissociative identity disorder, and his fanatical worship of Khonshu, Moon Knight has become something far different than any version of Batman.

8 What Is Moon Knight’s Real Name?

Those with a passing knowledge of Moon Knight likely know his name to be Marc Spector. However, IMDB has Oscar Isaac listed as Moon Knight, Steven Grant, and Moon Knight. The reality is that the question of Moon Knight’s real name is a complicated issue.

Marc Spector has dissociative identity disorder. Marc’s different alters include Marc Spector, Steven Grant, Buck Lime, Jake Lockley, Moon Knight, and Mr. Knight. There are others, and Moon Knight has learned how to use the different alters in his system to his advantage over the years.

Marc Spector is a very volatile person, which has nothing to do with his dissociative identity disorder, but the shifting alters of his DID can make it difficult for people to relate to him. That said, different superheroes have different views on Moon Knight.

The more straight and narrow types like Spider-Man and Daredevil are grateful to have his help but are wary of him and his more brutal methods. Captain America used to be pretty judgemental towards Moon Knight (even asking him to keep out of the Superhuman Civil War), but he’s become more accepting of Marc in more recent years. Moon Knight and the Punisher have worked together but really don’t like one another. And thanks to Moon Knight’s recent antics, many of the current Avengers don’t trust him.

6 What Teams Has Moon Knight Been A Part Of?

Despite Marc’s mercurial nature, he’s actually been quite the team player over the years. Notably, he was a part of the West Coast Avengers and was later recruited onto Captain America’s Secret Avengers. He was recruited to the Defenders at one point, though his tenure wasn’t very long.

Misty Knight called upon Moon Knight’s aid when she was running her Heroes for Hire operation. When Wong needed to save Doctor Strange from the mess he made, Wong put together a new Midnight Sons team that included Moon Knight among its membership.

5 Are Those Moon Knight Memes Really From A Comic?

Moon Knight Marvel

There have been several comic panels floating around the internet that include Moon Knight. The most infamous of which involves Moon Knight walking down some steps and demanding that Dracula give him his money.

These images don’t come from Moon Knight comics. Moon Knight didn’t go to Dracula’s castle in an attempt to get money from him. That said, this sounds like something Moon Knight would be capable of given his character. It’s worth mentioning that Luke Cage once tore through Doctor Doom’s castle to get compensation for a job he took from Doom.

4 Did Moon Knight Really Rip Someone’s Face Off?

15 Moon Knight and Bushman

Moon Knight has rather unconventional methods compared to other superheroes. One of his most infamous acts was carving then ripping off the face of Raul Bushman.

Bushman was another mercenary on Marc Spector’s team in Egypt. The two had just met each other for the first time on a mission in Cairo. It quickly became clear that Bushman enjoyed the killing more than Marc, and Bushman betrayed Marc by killing him and leaving him for dead in Egypt. This is where Marc first met Khonshu and became his agent on Earth. Bushman would go on to torment Moon Knight in the years to come, culminating in Moon Knight ripping off Bushman’s face.

3 Does Moon Knight Ever Kill The Bad Guys?

Shadow Knight

Moon Knight doesn’t stray away from blood. In the instance where he ripped off Bushman’s face, he thought that he had finally killed the man. However, Bushman later returned to torment Marc Spector again.

Moon Knight has killed a number of vampires in more recent comics. He killed the Midnight Man in a duel, and he later killed Midnight Man’s son, Midnight, by stabbing him in the head with a clock hand. He killed his own brother, Randall Spector, by slitting his throne with a crescent dart made of sapphire. (In fairness, Randall was trying to kill Moon Knight under the alias of Shadow Knight). Moon Knight also used to carve crescent moon’s into people’s foreheads, though these were generally people he let live.

2 What Are Some Moon Knight Villains?

Bullseye Shadow Night Bushman - Marvel Comics

Moon Knight doesn’t have the most prominent rogues gallery in comics, but he has a few figures worth remembering. For example, there’s the bloodthirsty mercenary, Raul Bushman. Then there’s Marc’s crazed brother, Randall Spector, who’s gone by the names Hatchet Man and Shadow Knight.

Anton Mogart attempted to be a dark inversion of Moon Knight as the Midnight Man, and his son became a villain known as Midnight. He has frequently fought the fear-obsessed Scarecrow (yes, that’s a Marvel villain too). More recently, a hooded maniac called the Zodiac has been tormenting Moon Knight and his friends. Others include the Sun King, Stained Glass Scarlet, Moon Shade, Black Spectre, Morpheus, and Chainsaw.

1 Where Did He Make His First Appearance?

Moon Knight first appeared in Werewolf By Night #32 in May of 1975. He was created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin. In this first outing, he fights Werewolf by Night, but the battle ends in a stalemate as Moon Knight has to retreat.

Moon Knight would receive his first ongoing series in 1980 under Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz. The villain Raul Bushman also made his first appearance in this issue. The series ran for 38 issues before ending in 1984. However, Moon Knight would make several comebacks, and he has an ongoing series at the time of writing under creators Jed MacKay and Alessandro Cappuccio.
