Taron Egerton on Potential Wolverine Role: ‘That’s Like Playing Bond’

For several years now, Kingsman star Taron Egerton has been a popular fan-casting choice for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s variant of Wolverine, who, thus far, has been played by just one other actor on film. The actor recently touched on the potential role, calling it an exciting prospect and comparing it to playing James Bond.

In an interview on The One Show, Egerton discussed rumors of an appearance in the near future as the iconic mutant, declaring, “There’s no truth in it at all. There’s no truth in it. It would, be, obviously, really exciting, but I don’t know.” When asked if he would take the role if offered, Egerton made clear he would.

He said, “That’s like playing Bond… It would be exciting to play a role where you play to by such a huge audience. Those movies are the most watched movies in the world.” Finally, he commented on the rumors once again, stating outright, “It’s a great thrill and it’s a great part. But there’s no truth in it. Very flattering, though.”

The X-man has not been seen on cinema screens since 2017’s Logan— the final film starring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Jackman played the character since his live-action debut in 2000’s X-Men, though the casting choice was a controversial one at the time. The actor gradually became a fan-favorite and became a staple of the X-Men franchise. Despite urging from the likes of fans and even Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, Jackman has insisted that the last solo film was his way of saying farewell to the character and that he would not be returning to the role.

Though Jackman won’t return, Wolverine is rumored to return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though with a new actor attached. Egerton is — as mentioned and despite the actor’s denial — one of those actors rumored to take on the role. It was recently suggested that the mutant will appear in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, though this is simply a rumor and has not been officially confirmed.

He isn’t the only X-man believed to appear in the film. Since the premiere of the most recent trailer, fans are convinced that Sir Patrick Stewart make his return to the role of Professor Charles Xavier in the Doctor Strange sequel, and as part of the comic book team, the Illuminati, too. Stewart himself has played coy since the trailer’s release, neither confirming nor denying any involvement.
