Batgirl’s Michael Keaton Shares a Silhouetted Look at His Batman Suit

Batgirl‘s Michael Keaton teased his upcoming return to the role of Batman in a new photo.

Keaton shared the photo to his official Instagram without a captain. While it doesn’t directly show the actor wearing his Batman costume, the image features the Dark Knight’s looming silhouette, complete with cowl and cape. Keaton will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the upcoming Batgirl film, which is currently filming in Glasgow, Scotland.

Keaton portrayed the Dark Knight in 1989’s Batman and Batman Returns in 1992 and will reprise the role in both Batgirl and The Flash. While Keaton’s photo doesn’t directly show off his suit, a series of recently released photos and videos from behind-the-scenes of the upcoming film offered a glimpse of Keaton’s upgraded batsuit alongside a younger Commissioner James Gordon, played by JK Simmons. Other behind-the-scenes photos from the Batgirl set revealed the character’s new costume in murals displayed on Glasgow’s Gotham City set.

One of the videos taken from the set of Batgirl showed the cast and crew filming a nighttime scene between Batman and Gordon, which took place under Glasgow’s Kingston Bridge. In the scene, Gordon is seemingly reunited with his daughter — a young Barbara Gordon, who will later become the titular Batgirl. Keaton’s Batman is only briefly seen in the video, but it is enough to tease a moment between the two characters in HBO Max’s upcoming DC Extended Universe film.

Keaton’s appearance in the DCEU film was teased in December 2021, before being officially confirmed when Batgirl star Leslie Grace, who will portray Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, welcomed the veteran Batman actor to the film. Batgirl was first announced in March 2017 and it was confirmed in 2021 that co-directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah would take over the project with a script from Christina Hodson, who wrote for The Flash and Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

“With Batgirl, we hope to take the audience on a fun ride and see a different side of Gotham,” producer Kristin Burr said in May 2021. “Christina’s script is crackling with spirit. [Arbi and Fallah] have an excited and joyous energy which is infectious, making them the perfect filmmakers for this Batproject. And I’m just psyched I get to be part of the DC universe, which is super cool.”

Batgirl will premiere exclusively on HBO Max in 2022.
