Kirby: 10 Harsh Realities Of Living In Dreamland | CBR

Kirby is the lovable pink puffball from Nintendo‘s catalog of iconic characters. He’s had a steady stream of game releases since his first installment, Kirby’s Dream Land, in 1992. Some of his most beloved installments include Kirby’s Adventure, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, and Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Of course, Kirby is also well-known for his appearances in the Super Smash Bros. series of fighting games, which he has been a part of since the first game.

The basic premise of Kirby is fairly straightforward. Kirby can eat and assimilate any power, and he’s frequently fighting villains such as King Dedede and Meta Knight in the cartoonish world of Dream Land. However, the thought of living in Dream Land is far from simple.

10 Dream Land Has No Currency And Is Stuck In The Barter System

According to the Kirby Wiki, Dream Land has no system of currency. There is a hint at currency having existed at some point in the games, but the denizens of Dream Land are largely self-sustaining and can just find what they need.

That’s all well and good, but what if a Waddle Dee can’t find enough food for one day? Are they just meant to lug around some of their precious items to hopefully trade with a Galbo and hope for the best? A currency could iron all of this out by introducing a universal bargaining token. All of this said it is worth noting that there is money in the Kirby animated series, Kirby: Right Back At Ya!

9 You Live In The Same Reality As Marx

Marx is a fairy-like entity who stars as the main villain of Milky Way Wishes in Kirby’s Super Star and Kirby’s Super Star Ultra. Marx is already unsettling in his seeming innocence and cuteness in his base form. However, his true form is downright terrifying.

Marx’s true form has his eyes widening, his back sprouting bone-like wings, and fangs growing in his mouth. He is likely most known for his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where he appears as a boss to terrify players of the World of Light campaign and at the end of some Classic Mode campaigns.

8 Most Inhabitants Are Waddle Dees, So Chances Of Being One Are High

Waddle Dees are the most common type of creature living in Dream Land. They are round and somewhat innocent-looking creatures that, like Kirby, don’t really have arms or legs but instead hands and feet that rotate along the surface of their round form.

They have no innate special abilities and give none to Kirby if they are inhaled. They are generally weak and, statistically speaking, if someone were to wake up in Dream Land tomorrow they would likely be a Waddle Dee.

7 Meta Knight Is A Violent Ronin With Unclear Motives And A Battleship

Meta Knight from the Kirby franchise.

Meta Knight is a frequent antagonist of Kirby throughout his game series. Meta Knight has his own system of morality, but he has chosen Kirby as his arch-nemesis and rival. Meta Knight isn’t one to go on violent sprees, but his gung-ho attitude towards warring with Kirby makes him dangerous to anyone in the general vicinity.

Worse yet, he has the Halberd, a vast flying warship with Meta Knight’s mask on the front. It has countless cannons and is staffed by a crew called Meta-Knights who loyally serve the Meta Knight himself. Meta Knight may not attack for no reason, but it’s still best to stay far away from him.

6 It Wouldn’t Be Fun To Be Ruled By King Dedede

King Dedede seems to be the de facto ruler of Dream Land despite no one seeming to like him very much. However, monarchs don’t really need to be popular. He is lazy, arrogant, selfish, and gluttonous. He doesn’t seem to care for the denizens of Dream Land.

King Dedede is known for his massive mallet that can deal a lot of damage when it makes an impact. He frequently fights Kirby, but, to Dedede’s credit, he’s been less of the main antagonist in more recent titles. Nonetheless, he is the government of Dream Land, and he really doesn’t take his job seriously at all.

5 Anyone Can Summon The Galactic Nova To Make A Wish

The Galactic Nova is an entity/comet that can be summoned by the fountains that surround Planet Popstar (the planet upon which Dream Land exists). The Galactic Nova seems to be a friendly enough creature, but it is seemingly bound to grant one wish of any kind for the one who summons it.

Activating the fountains is no mean feat, but it’s still possible, as Kirby has shown. If someone manages to accomplish this and summon the Galactic Nova, they can essentially do whatever they want. That wish seemingly has no limit, as was shown when the Galactic Nova stopped the war between the Sun and the Moon.

4 There’s A Force Called Dark Matter That Can Warp And Twist The Entire World

True Dark Matter Kirby Cropped

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards introduced an antagonist called the Dark Matter. It follows a fairy called Ribbon from Planet Ribbon Star to Planet Popstar to obtain Ribbon Star’s powerful Crystal. The Crystal shatters, and this leads to Ribbon and Kirby rounding up the shards.

In the meantime, Dark Rimuro, Dark Rimura, and Dark Rimuru began corrupting all of Dream Land to fight against Kirby and Ribbon and gain the Crystal Shards for themselves. This trio of villains seems to be an aspect of Dark Matter, as the “Real” Dark Matter is a different entity. However, the fact that any Dark Matter may have the ability to corrupt and mutate individuals is frightening.

3 There’s A Sorcerer Who Can Turn Everything Into Yarn

Kirby's Epic Yarn

Kirby’s Epic Yarn introduces the villain known as Yin-Yarn. He uses his magic to turn all of Dream Land and everything in it into creatures made entirely of yarn. On the surface, this already feels like body horror. It gets worse when one realizes that Kirby can unravel that yarn and use it for his own goals.

While Kirby may be the hero who ultimately stops Yin-Yarn, it’s still pretty frightening that any Waddle-Dee civilian could be turned to yarn and unraveled by Kirby to be made into a power-up.

2 The Sun And The Moon Are Sentient And Do Not Like Each Other

At one point, the Sun and the Moon of Dream Land were in an all-out war. They are represented by the bosses known as Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright. Kirby had to summon the Galactic Nova to stop these two from killing each other and, presumably, bringing armageddon upon Dream Land and Planet Popstar.

Kirby has fought Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright as enemies, so their power may not be quite as immense as one would expect. However, it’s worth mentioning that Kirby himself seems to possess seemingly infinite power.

1 Kirby Could Consume Anyone And Absorb Their Essence At Any Moment

The most frightening fate that could befall anyone if they were to live in Dream Land is easily being consumed and assimilated by Kirby himself. This pink ball of joy is a non-stop eating machine with no apparent limit to his power or hunger. While he seems to usually go on adventures for the fate of Dream Land, he is usually stirred into action by a villain bothering him personally.

This means that accidentally waking up Kirby could end with some poor fool being eaten alive and turning into Kirby’s next power-up. Kirby may seem cute on the outside, but he’s also one of the most powerful characters that Nintendo has ever created.
