The latest phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been exploring the multiverse and alternate timelines, like in the Disney+ series, Loki. The series introduces fans to the idea of multiple timelines and “Variants,” which are alternate versions of characters who have been weeded out of their timeline. When Loki is captured by the Time Variance Authority, he eventually meets numerous Variants of himself, all vastly different from one another. However, one theory proposes a Loki Variant stranger than any in the series — Loki is actually Peter Pan.
A Reddit theory posted by u/River_Rattler explains that there are similarities between the Loki Variants and Disney’s animated Peter Pan. They propose that Kid Loki is Peter Pan. Their evidence? For starters, both characters are young and don’t seem to age. Both fight with daggers and are the leaders of their respective groups. Kid Loki and Peter Pan both wear green and have a habit of causing mischief and opposing any authority that isn’t themselves. But the most interesting parallel between the two young characters is that they are both gods from different ancient cultures. Loki is the Norse god of mischief, and Pan is the Greek god of the wild and the inspiration for author J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan.
The theory continues, suggesting that President Loki is Captain Hook. In Barrie’s novel, Hook and Peter Pan are constantly at war with one another, and similarly, President Loki and Kid Loki battle it out for who gets to be the leader of the Variants. The Void, where the pruned Lokis reside, is Neverland, where Peter Pan and Hook reside. As well, Alligator Loki is Tick Tock Croc. In a scene in Loki Season 1, Episode 5, Alligator Loki bites off President Loki’s hand, just like Tick Tock Croc bites off Captain Hook’s in Peter Pan.
The parallels drawn in the theory are compelling; however, several Redditors in the comments pointed out holes. One Redditor, u/annyc, noted that the Eternals already has characters that parallel Peter Pan. Sprite is Tinkerbell, Ikaris is Peter Pan, Sersei is Wendy and the rest of the Eternals are the lost boys. Kingo even makes a joke about it in the film.
Other than the parallels that the original Reddit poster made, there’s not much additional evidence that suggests Peter Pan is a Loki Variant. Nevertheless, the similarities are interesting. And with all the multiverse shenanigans going on in the MCU, who knows what’s possible.
