WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Peacemaker, now streaming on HBO Max.
According to Peacemaker creator James Gunn, a producer for the HBO Max series actually thought an explosion featured in the Season 1 finale had killed one of the actors.
Season 1, Episode 8, “It’s Cow or Never,” saw Peacemaker and the ARGUS agents use a Sonic Boom helmet to blow up the barn where the Butterflies had been keeping their “cow,” which served as their only food source. During the episode’s climactic battle, the helmet was activated by Danielle Brooks’ Leota Adebayo, blowing apart one of the Butterflies, played by Neil Webb. “When that guy (Cool Steve) explodes with the helmet?” Gunn said. “Our producer Simon Hatt saw that as we filmed it, not knowing the exploding dummy wasn’t Neil the actor, & thought we actually exploded him!!”

The Season 1 finale of Peacemaker is currently the best-performing episode for an HBO Max original series with the largest single-day performance on the streaming service. Details surrounding the eighth and final episode of Peacemaker‘s first season had been kept tightly under wraps until its premiere, with Gunn only showing seven out of eight episodes to critics before the series premiere. According to Gunn, this was to avoid any potential spoilers.
“I wouldn’t let them put out eight,” Gunn said in a previous interview. “They wanted to put out all eight. I said, ‘No way. No chance in hell are we putting out all eight.’ There’s just too many things [that] happen in episode eight that I just could not let it get out there. It would absolutely be spoiled. You know, I wouldn’t even let them give it to one place or anything like that because it just wasn’t… I didn’t want it to be out there.”
Peacemaker picks up directly after the events of The Suicide Squad and sees John Cena’s Christopher Smith drafted into an off-the-books mission known as Project Butterfly. He is joined by ARGUS agents Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), John Economos (Steve Agee), Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) and Leota Abedayo (Brooks), as well as Adrian Chase/Vigilante (Freddie Stroma). While “It’s Cow or Never” saw John Cena’s Peacemaker and the ARGUS agents complete their Project Butterfly mission, the season finale also featured an appearance from the Justice League, notably cameos from Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s The Flash.
Gunn has previously stated that DC Films and HBO Max let him go “hog wild” for the series, giving him plenty of freedom in this addition to the DC Extended Universe. When Peacemaker was first announced, Gunn called the series “an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag.” The series was recently renewed for a second season.
Peacemaker Season 1 is now streaming on HBO Max.
