Peacemaker Finale Is HBO Max’s Best-Performing Original Series Episode, Ever

Peacemaker‘s time is now on HBO Max.

On Twitter, Peacemaker star John Cena confirmed that the Season 1 finale of the James Gunn-helmed DC Extended Universe series has set a new viewership record for HBO Max. “Just learned from the good folks at [HBO Max] that the [Peacemaker] finale had the biggest single day performance for a Max Original series and was up 44% over the premiere episode!” he wrote. “That is a F#CKLOAD of [peace] and does not happen without ALL OF YOU! Truly grateful. Ready for Season [2]!”

Cena first played the DC anti-hero Christopher Smith/Peacemaker in writer-director Gunn’s DCEU film The Suicide Squad, which premiered simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on Aug. 6, 2021. While Peacemaker was seemingly killed by Bloodsport (Idris Elba) in the lead-up to the film’s climax, a post-credits scene revealed that he had indeed survived his injuries.

Cena subsequently reprised his role as Chris Smith for Peacemaker, a spinoff series that premiered its first three episodes on HBO Max earlier this year on Jan. 13. Peacemaker Season 1 ran for a total of eight episodes, concluding earlier this week on Feb. 17. Gunn wrote all eight episodes and directed five of them. Ahead of the Season 1 finale, Gunn and Cena announced that HBO Max had officially renewed Peacemaker for Season 2.

In addition to Cena, Peacemaker Season 1’s main cast features Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee, who reprise their respective roles of Emilia Harcourt and John Economos from The Suicide Squad. The rest of the main cast is made up of franchise newcomers, including Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase/Vigilante, Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn and Robert Patrick as August “Auggie” Smith/White Dragon.

Beyond Peacemaker Season 2, Gunn previously stated that he is developing a second Suicide Squad spinoff series for HBO Max, though did not divulge any details beyond that. “We’re working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that universe,” he told Deadline. “I can’t quite say.”

Prior to taking a crack at the DCEU with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, Gunn was perhaps best known for writing and directing the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Gunn is returning to Marvel Studios to helm Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, though recently stated that he’ll be shifting his focus to television projects after the fact.

“Yeah, I think I pretty much have decided that after I’m done with Guardians, I’m going to be doing television for at least a year,” the director told Variety. “My mind’s made up on that. Not all the shows that we’re dealing with are things that I’m going to be writing and directing, so some of them may take different amounts of my time. Peacemaker is going to be me writing, me directing and spending all my time on set. But other shows that may not be writing and directing or not directing all the episodes.”
