Warning: The following contains spoilers from Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett “Chapter 7: In the Name of Honor,” streaming now on Disney+.
The Book of Boba Fett finale revealed Grogu’s answer to Luke Skywalker’s controversial ultimatum in spectacular fashion. Riding along with Peli Motto, Grogu arrived in the middle of the climactic battle sporting his stylish Mandalorian chain armor, solidifying his desire to return to his surrogate father Din Djarin. That decision obviously has huge implications for the upcoming third season of The Mandalorian.
Grogu electing to seemingly turn his back on further Jedi training creates questions about how his Force sensitivity may develop over time. Grogu clearly still has an aptitude for the Force, which he showcases in The Book of Boba Fett finale when he saves Din from a Scorpenek Droid and later puts the more sympathetic but still scary rancor to sleep. He could fall under the category of Gray Jedi — a title that is also applicable to Ahsoka Tano as well. If the two are indeed on a similar path, that revisits the idea that Ahsoka could train Grogu when Season 3 of The Mandalorian premieres.
Speaking of grey areas, Din Djarin being a former bounty hunter leaves room for more ambiguity in future stories. Grogu’s choice to pick the Mandalorian chain armor puts the Child in the same grey area that Din Djarin finds himself occupying. Most of the time Din is a transient, wandering around the galaxy and not necessarily working towards conquering some sort of evil. With his influence, it’s possible that Grogu develops some other not-so-light-side Force powers, or develops his usage of the Force in ways that haven’t been explored by either the Jedi or Sith yet.
There’s also the exciting possibility that Grogu could choose both the Mandalorian and Jedi paths in the future — or that he already has. Fans want him to still wield Yoda’s lightsaber at some point, despite turning it down at the Jedi temple. The question would be how Grogu gets it from Luke; if he’d taken it with him when R2-D2 brought him back to Tatooine, The Book of Boba Fett would almost certainly have shown viewers Grogu either hiding the lightsaber or using it in the finale.
Since The Book of Boba Fett ended with Din and Grogu leaving Tatooine, it’s probable that The Mandalorian Season 3 will begin with Djarin returning to his home planet of Mandalore to repent for the helmet removal that got him banished from his tribe and try to rebuild his people. With Grogu joining his the mission, the emotional stakes are automatically heightened; both characters have been in situations where they’ve been saved by the other, and they won’t want to lose their found family again.
The choice for The Book of Boba Fett to close on the image of Din Djarin and Grogu was an intentional tease for the third season of The Mandalorian. Now that the duo have started another journey together and are officially on the same page philosophically, the possibilities for Season 3 are much more intriguing and emotional than they’ve ever been before.
