Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn revealed where his attention will be after he closes up shop on the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, which arrives on the silver screen next year.
“Yeah, I think I pretty much have decided that after I’m done with Guardians, I’m going to be doing television for at least a year,” Gunn told Variety after he was asked if working in television appealed more to him than movies. “My mind’s made up on that. Not all the shows that we’re dealing with are things that I’m going to be writing and directing, so some of them may take different amounts of my time. Peacemaker is going to be me writing, me directing and spending all my time on set. But other shows that may not be writing and directing or not directing all the episodes.”
Gunn stated earlier this year that Guardians 3 is “the last time people will see this team of Guardians,” adding that he “just [wants] to be true to the characters, the story and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story.” Additionally, while plot details for the third Guardians movie have not been made public, Gunn said that the film will be darker than its predecessors.
“It’s big,” the filmmaker said. “It’s so, so big and dark and different from what people might be expecting it to be.” Gunn is not the only person involved with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise to comment on Guardians 3. Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista –who respectively play Gamora and Drax the Destroyer — both shared their feelings regarding the film, with Saldana calling the process “bittersweet.” As for Bautista, the actor remarked, “This is kind of where my journey started. It’s come full circle and I’m looking forward to wrapping it up.”
In regards to Peacemaker, Gunn recently announced that the DC Extended Universe series had been renewed for a second season on HBO Max. “Creating Peacemaker has been one of the true highlights of my life, both professionally and otherwise, with John Cena and the incredible creative team around me, as well as our partners at HBO Max,” Gunn said. “To have something we all love so much be loved by the audience in turn has been a wonderful experience. I can’t wait for folks to see where Team Peacemaker goes in Season Two!”
Outside of Guardians 3 and Peacemaker, it was recently announced that Gunn is working on another The Suicide Squad spinoff for HBO Max. However, similar to the plot details for Guardians 3, information surrounding the upcoming spinoff is currently being kept under wraps, though Gunn stated that he doesn’t “think it will be the same genre as Peacemaker.”
Written and directed by Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opens in theaters on May 23, 2023.
