She-Hulk: Marvel Quietly Introduces Jen Walters’ New Boyfriend

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Fantastic Four #40, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The latest issue of Fantastic Four, which is by Dan Slott, Rachael Stott, Jesus Aburtov and VC’s Joe Caramagna, subtly reveals that Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk and Jack Hart/Jack of Hearts are dating.

The second issue in the “Reckoning War” event, Fantastic Four #40 sees Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic using the knowledge he gained from accessing the Cyclopedia Universum, which contains the knowledge of all the Watchers, to mount a defense against the invading Badoon. Mister Fantastic ends up bringing Walters and Jack to the Baxter Building, as he needs their help with one part of his plan. While they’re there, Walters and Jack banter in such a way that indicates they’re dating, with She-Hulk calling her companion “babe.” Later, they hold hands as Walters tells Jack that he doesn’t have to come along on their mission to defend the M’kraan Crystal in Shi’ar space.

A page from Fantastic Four #40 indicating Jack of Hearts is dating She-Hulk.

Created by Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen, Jack of Hearts first appeared in 1976’s The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #22. Jack’s powers allow him to control energy, though he’s never been particularly skilled at doing so. Still, Jack has used his abilities as part of the Avengers. Eventually, he died after exploding while saving Cassie Lang from a child murderer, though he was later resurrected.

Earlier this year, Jack of Hearts re-appeared at the end of She-Hulk #1, by Rainbow Rowell, Roge Antonio and Rico Renzi, making clear he and Walters would be a big part of each other’s stories going forward. Still, as of writing, that five-part series has not confirmed Walters and Jack of Hearts are dating.

Billed as a story over 15 years in the making, “Reckoning War” is a Marvel Comics event exploring the fallout from an ancient secret war in which a group called the Reckoning, who were originally empowered by the Watchers, return to wreak havoc on the universe. The first issue of the series, Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1, confirmed the title’s connection to a trip to a dystopian future that Walters took in 2005’s She-Hulk #3.

Fantastic Four #40 is on sale now. The next installments in the event, Fantastic Four #41 and Trial of the Watcher #1, release on March 2 and March 16, respectively. She-Hulk #2 also releases on March 2.
