Cut Suicide Squad Clip Includes a Very Different Joker/Harley Moment

A newly surfaced clip from 2016’s Suicide Squad shows a much different version of Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn’s (Margot Robbie) reunion in the DC Extended Universe film.

Posted to Twitter by @TheFilmExiles, the clip shows Joker berating Harley after picking her up via helicopter in the movie. In the theatrical cut of the Suicide Squad, Harley boards the helicopter, which Joker hijacked, and the two kiss and act lovey just before Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) orders the vehicle shot down. The theatrical version does not show Joker chastising Harley. @TheFilmExiles did not immediately provide a clear source for the clip, saying that it arrived in the outlet’s inbox.

Directed and written by David Ayer, Suicide Squad saw the titular team — which consisted of Quinn, Floyd Lawton/Deadshot (Will Smith), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), George “Digger” Harkness/Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and several others — working to stop June Moone/Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) when she begins posing a major threat to humanity.

Commercially, Suicide Squad was successful, earning $746 million against a budget of around $175. However, the critical reception to Suicide Squad is a different story. While the movie did win an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 89th Academy Awards, Suicide Squad only holds a 27 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest score for any DCEU film.

In the year since release, Ayer has spoken negatively about the theatrical version of Suicide Squad and explained how it differed from his cut, which has resulted in calls to #ReleaseTheAyerCut. Ayer’s version of Suicide Squad is said to feature more of the Joker and Harley’s relationship, a Joker-led assault on Arkham Asylum, a Joker/Task Force X showdown and, among other things, a larger role for Tatsu Yamashiro/Katana (Karen Fukuhara). Speaking about the above scene in particular, Ayer revealed he actually intended to have Joker push Harley from the helicopter with the intention of killing her.

The #ReleaseTheAyerCut hashtag is an extension of #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, which became prominent online following the critical and commercial failure of 2017’s Justice League. That hashtag called for Warner Bros. to give original Justice League director Zack Snyder’s cut of the movie a release. In 2021, Warner Bros. did indeed release Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max. Still Warner Bros. has said it has no plans to release the Ayer Cut.

Suicide Squad is available to stream on HBO Max.
