Concept art for the upcoming Black Adam film reveals a better look at Pierce Brosnan’s Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate.
On Twitter, artist BossLogic shared some concept art from the upcoming Black Adam film. The first two images are of Dwayne Johnson as Teth-Adam/Black Adam, while the second two are of Brosnan’s Doctor Fate. The art shows Doctor Fate both with and without his mask. The latter especially showcases the beard Brosnan will sport in the movie.
This isn’t the first look fans have gotten at Brosnan’s Doctor Fate. A general DC trailer for Super Bowl LVI teased numerous films, including The Flash, The Batman and Black Adam. The look at Black Adam in particular provided a first look at Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Doctor Fate and various other Justice Society of America characters.
Created by Gardner Fox and Howard Sherman, Doctor Fate first appeared in 1940’s More Fun Comics #55. A powerful magic user, Kent gets his power from Nabu the Wise and is occasionally possessed by that being through the helmet. Doctor Fate has, over the years, been a key member of such teams as the Justice League Dark and JSA.
Brosnan is an actor probably best known for his role as James Bond from 1995 until 2002. Outside of that role, Brosnan is a Golden Globe Award nominee. His most recent film was The King’s Daughter, in which he played King Louis XIV. That movie released earlier this year and received mostly negative reviews. At the time of writing The King’s Daughter holds a 19 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Black Adam sees the titular character awakening after 5,000 years of imprisonment. In the movie, he’ll interact with the JSA, which consists of Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), Hawkman, Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) and Doctor Fate. Additionally, Adrianna Tomaz/Isis (Sarah Shahi) — Black Adam’s love interest from the comics — will also appear in the DC Extended Universe film. Producers are planning a multiple-film arc for Black Adam.
Black Adam’s DCEu debut has been a long time coming. Originally, there were plans to include the character in Shazam!. However, that movie changed and Warner Bros. instead gave the go ahead for a solo Black Adam film starring Johnson. That project was initially announced in 2017, with producer Hiram Garcia saying the delay resulted from wanting to get the project just right.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a script by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, Black Adam is slated for release on July 29.
