With the trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally here, fans were left vehemently scouring to see which heroes and villains made an appearance. Scarlet Witch, Wong and America Chavez were present, as expected, while enemies such as Baron Mordo, an evil Strange and other monsters were spotted as well. But as Strange finds himself being held accountable before a mysterious tribunal, it looks like the Marvel Cinematic Universe found a dark, new role for the sinister Ultron.
In the trailer, Strange is handcuffed and escorted to the room where many assume he’ll meet the likes of Professor Xavier and the Illuminati. But just before this conversation takes place, Strange is being chaperoned by Ultron bots, who have a sleeker design than they did in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
They have yellow eyes rather than red, are rocking what appear to be arc reactors in their chest, and their faces resemble Iron Man more than Ultron. It’s possible the bots a legion belonging to a variant Ultron that could have been a perfected form of the villain. This Ultron, however, could be a gatekeeper to the Multiverse rather than the outright villain that appeared in What If…? that used the Infinity Stones for mass murder.
If the bots are deployed like this, it would make Ultron similar to the Watcher. Should the Watcher be deemed as someone corruptible for interfering in What If…?, an Ultron might have been promoted and is now using this army as his eyes and ears. They could even be powered by Infinity Stones, crafting an unpredictable journey to come in what very well might be a redemption arc for the villain. After all, Ultron’s purpose was to place armor around Earth, and it can be expanded to armor around all of reality.
However, ego always plays a role in his story, and it’s easy to envisage Ultron turning on the council and doing his own thing. Rebellion will always be in his nature, and he might not agree with how his peers want to bring about peace and order. This easily opens the door to conflict — except, in this case, Ultron might be a lot more powerful and deadly. Seeing as the council’s shrouded in mystery, fans will have to wait to see why these bots are in action, but as is always the case with Ultron, arrogance and destruction aren’t far behind if he’s involved.
See what this Ultron army is up to in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which premieres in theaters on May 6.
