Uncharted Brings in Solid $21.5 Million at International Box Office

Uncharted has already raked in an impressive $21.5 million box office haul, ahead of its domestic release.

Sony Pictures’ live-action adaptation of the acclaimed Naughty Dog video game series performed well in 15 overseas markets, according to a recent report by Variety. The report attributed $6.4 million of Uncharted‘s international ticket sales to the United Kingdom (where it topped the box office), $3.5 million to Spain, $4.5 million to Russia, $1.3 million to Ukraine, and $4 million to the Middle East. Uncharted‘s opening puts it ahead of other pandemic-era blockbusters like Eternals, Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, based on how those films performed at similar points in their own theatrical runs.

Uncharted stars Tom Holland as treasure hunter Nathan Drake, a role the actor admitted was a struggle for him to play. “One of the most difficult things about this character was playing ‘the cool guy,’ said Holland in a recent interview. “Historically, I’ve always sort of played the outsider who doesn’t particularly have many friends and isn’t the cool kid. So Nathan Drake is the complete opposite, and that was something that took me a while to get used to and feel comfortable doing.”

Holland has also opened up about coming close to a burnout-related breakdown while filming Uncharted, recalling, “There was a point in time where I had to make the call and say, ‘Guys, I’m going to need a weekend because if not, I’m going to sort of fall apart.'” The star attributed his near-breakdown to the pressures of Uncharted‘s intense shooting schedule, as well as a hamstring injury that flared up near the end of principal photography.

Despite this, Holland apparently enjoyed his Uncharted experience overall. The English actor recently listed filming a stunt sequence where Nathan Drake is hit by a car as one of his favorite moments working on the movie. “It’s a pretty cool thing when someone says, ‘How was your day today?’ And I’m like, ‘Hey, I got hit by a car 17 times,'” Holland enthused. “And people are like, ‘Wait, what?’ So for me, that was a very proud moment.”

Holland’s Uncharted co-stars include Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan, Antonio Banderas as Santiago Moncada, Sophia Ali as Chloe Frazer and Tati Gabrielle as Braddock. The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer from a screenplay by Rafe Lee Judkins, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, which is itself based on the Uncharted video game series created by Amy Hennig, developed by Naughty Dog, and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Uncharted premieres in cinemas on Feb.18.
