Robert Pattinson Says Doing The Batman Voice Was ‘Really Hard’

Robert Pattinson struggled to adopt the Dark Knight’s signature husky voice in The Batman.

Pattinson described performing Batman’s vocals as “really, really hard,” in a recent interview with GQ. “It’s really hard to get into an artificially lower register, and to do it a long time,” explained Pattinson. “I mean there’s a lot of scenes in this as well where you’re kind of — long dialogue scenes as Batman, which is quite unique out of a lot of the other movies in the series, and trying to kind of stay really, really low and have kind of nuance in the lines and stuff, I mean it’s really hard.”

The Batman star went on to reveal how doing his Batman voice temporarily toughened his throat muscles, only for them to return to normal shortly after shooting wrapped. “I think I was doing vocal exercises without actually knowing they were vocal exercises. I think [my] larynx or something just got strengthened or something when I was doing the movie,” recalled Pattinson. “When I was doing ADR for [The Batman], I mean I couldn’t even do the voice again, it had completely reverted back to normal.”

Pattinson also elaborated on the challenge of developing a Batman voice that stood apart from those of his predecessors, like The Dark Knight trilogy’s Christian Bale. “I think Christian Bale did such a — I mean it’s so kind of iconic, just the voice that he was doing in it, but it’s almost impossible to not do that,” he said. Fortunately for Pattinson, his vocal performance has impressed fans so far, with some even calling it the best live-action Bat-voice to date.

This isn’t the first time Pattinson has opened up about the difficulties of playing Batman. The actor has spoken about how lonely he felt during The Batman shoot, saying, “The nature of the shoot was so kind of insular, always shooting at night, just really dark all the time, and I felt very much alone.” Pattinson added that the intense secrecy surrounding the production further compounded his sense of isolation, as did the physical limitations that came with wearing his restrictive Batman costume for extended periods of time.

Despite these challenges, Pattinson appears optimistic about donning Batman’s cape and cowl again in the future. The star has confirmed he’s spoken with The Batman co-writer/director Matt Reeves about expanding The Batman into a trilogy and has said he’s willing to return as the Dark Knight “as many times as people want to see it.”

The Batman arrives in cinemas on March 4.
