Daredevil alum Charlie Cox, who recently reprised his role as Matt Murdock in Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home, says he and Jon Favreau improvised a reference to the Man Without Fear’s best friend, Foggy Nelson. However, this attempted Easter egg was ultimately left on the cutting floor.
Cox starred as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in all three seasons of the Netflix original series Marvel’s Daredevil, which ran from 2015 to 2018. Elden Henson starred opposite Cox as Franklin “Foggy” Nelson, Matt’s best friend and law partner. Cox and Henson reprised their roles as Matt and Foggy, respectively, in the Netflix miniseries Marvel’s The Defenders. Henson also made guest appearances as Foggy in both Marvel’s Jessica Jones and Marvel’s Luke Cage.
Long before Henson took on the role of Foggy, however, the character was played by Favreau in 20th Century Fox’s Ben Affleck-led Daredevil feature film from 2003. Favreau, of course, went on to play Harold “Happy” Hogan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe starting with 2008’s Iron Man (which he also directed), with No Way Home marking his seventh official outing as the character.
Evidently, this shared history with the Daredevil mythos was not lost on Cox and Favreau, who appeared on-screen together during the former’s No Way Home cameo. “I don’t think they used it, but we added a little Easter egg where he goes, ‘Yeah, I’m a little foggy on how that happened’ or something,” Cox said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “That was a cool moment for me to meet him and chat about all that stuff.”
Given the apparent lack of continuity between Marvel Studios and the now-defunct Marvel Television’s respective projects, fans were ecstatic to see Matt Murdock in No Way Home, thus cementing Cox’s take on the Man Without Fear as MCU canon. Daredevil is expected to feature in future MCU projects — and while Cox says he knows very little in the way of details at the moment, he’s “very excited” to see what comes next. That said, it still remains to be seen if Cox’s Daredevil co-stars Henson and Deborah Ann Woll (who played Karen Page) will join him in the MCU proper.
At any rate, those looking to get up to speed on the Daredevil series will soon no longer be able to do so on Netflix. It recently came to light that all of Netflix’s original Marvel shows — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher — would be removed from the platform on Tuesday, March 1. Marvel and Disney will reportedly announced a new streaming home for these shows soon.
