WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of All of Us Are Dead, now streaming on Netflix.
In Season 1 of Netflix’s All of Us Are Dead, the Korean city of Hyosan was ravaged by a zombie plague. A high-school teacher, Lee Byeong-chan, created a virus to get his son to be stronger to oppose bullies, but this quickly backfired and made the school into a chaotic hub of the undead.
Over the 12 episodes, many people died and turned into zombies, which inspired the military to make a crucial decision to save the likes of Seoul from getting infected. With that in mind, let’s dissect the gory finale, how Hyosan’s teens fared and the implications.
Gwi-nam Finally Found His Target
The main villain on campus was the bully, Gwi-nam, who became a hybrid. The virus mutated in him, giving him super-strength, speed, smell and hearing, making him into a super-soldier that couldn’t be killed. It didn’t matter if he got impaled or fell off buildings; he’d regenerate with his sole purpose being to kill the survivors — namely Cheong-san, who beat him up and left him for zombies to feed on.
At a nearby construction site, Gwi-nam came for his nemesis, biting and turning him too. It led to a bloody fight with Cheong-san buying his friends time to escape. Sadly, the hero lost his eye, harkening back to when he dug Gwi-nam’s out. This gave the tyrant the upper hand, as he pummeled Cheong-san for fun.
All of Us Are Dead’s Military Bombed Hyosan
Just as the fight was about to be concluded, the military bombed most of Hyosan. They used drones to distract and herd zombies via sound, after realizing hybrids existed that could pass for humans. As such, they razed the place to contain the spread. The construction site exploded, seemingly killing Cheong-san and Gwi-nam, while most of the school was lit up too.
Unfortunately, the military head, Seon-moo, couldn’t live with his decision. He absolved politicians of blame, knowing there’d be inquiries and cover-ups, leaving a video incriminating himself. He wore his honorable uniform before shooing himself, broken over how many families and innocents died as collateral damage.
All of Us Are Dead’s Survivors Were Found In Disarray
The teens luckily got out to the woods and away from the blast zone; however, another zombie attack thinned their ranks. Ha-ri, the expert archer, lost her brother, Wu-jin, as he tried to protect her, causing Nam-ra to snap his neck in a mercy killing. She was a hybrid too, and while she maintained most of her humanity, she left the group as her hunger was returning.
On-jo, broken over losing her beloved Cheong-san, and Nam-ra’s crush, Su-hyeok, tried to get her to come with them, but she fled knowing she was struggling to control the beast inside. The military eventually found them, placing them in quarantine over the next three months as the government tried to clean up the mess. Hyosan became a shanty town with refugees, with the kids lacking lives, education and proper access to food, water and such.
A New Zombie Era Looms For All of Us Are Dead Season 2
On-jo realized someone was lighting campfires on the school roof, thinking it was Nam-ra, who loved that one moment they shared during their survival run. She and the crew went back, finding Nam-ra, who was healed and keeping her zombie side at bay. She admitted even if they were split up, they’d remain friends. She then jumped off the roof to meet other hybrids who survived, suggesting she was leading this new species.
However, it won’t be easy because the military found and took Byeong-chan’s family in from his home after the dad turned and seemingly died in the blast. He was experimenting on them, so after his death, the military wants to continue studying these patient zeroes. They also have an infected soldier, Jae-jun, and a hybrid student, Eun-ji, to experiment on, so they may be perfecting soldiers for the army and the impending clean-up rather than seeking a cure. They were trying to make a virus like this in the past, after all, so once they can appropriate Byeong-chan’s work, Nam-ra’s clan could be hunted as a test run.
See how the military drastically changes life for the survivors in Season 1 of All of Us Are Dead, now streaming on Netflix.
