RUMOR: Star Wars Has Plans for a New Post-Sequel Trilogy Jedi Order

A new rumor suggests that Lucasfilm could be looking to establish a new, different Jedi Order that would rise in the aftermath of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy.

On a recent edition of The Ringer-Verse podcast discussing Disney+’s live-action Star Wars series The Book of Boba Fett, former Vanity Fair reporter Joanna Robinson explained that she has heard “whispers” of the Disney-owned Lucasfilm not only being interested in, but actively building towards the idea of a post-Sequel Trilogy Jedi Order that embraces emotional attachments instead of forbidding them, thus firmly setting itself apart from the old Order.

As one user on the r/StarWarsLeaks subreddit pointed out, Robinson doesn’t exactly identify as a leaker. Rather, she is a “respected and credible reporter in the entertainment industry and has tons of sources at Marvel and the rest of Disney.” In fact, Robinson is currently writing a book about the behind-the-scenes history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Robinson’s latest tidbit came about when the presenters of The Ringer-Verse expressed interest in seeing a new Jedi Order that has learned from the mistakes of the past, at which point she revealed that Lucasfilm had the exact same idea. That being said, Robinson also clarified that “you can fill an entire stadium with ideas Lucasfilm has been interested in but never realized,” meaning these supposed plans might not come to fruition.

Nevertheless, 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — the third and final film in the Sequel Trilogy — certainly left the door open for a new iteration of the Jedi. In the film, main protagonist Rey (Daisy Ridley) essentially becomes the heir apparent to all the Jedi who came before her, using their shared power to defeat her grandfather, the resurrected Sith Lord Emperor Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). Rey then constructs a new, yellow-bladed lightsaber and adopts the surname Skywalker, in honor of her mentors, Luke (Mark Hamill) and Leia (Carrie Fisher).

Furthermore, thanks to the recent release of the aforementioned Book of Boba Fett, there has been much discussion regarding the Jedi Order’s antiquated aversion to attachment. In the series (which is set roughly five years after the Original Trilogy and 25 years before the Sequel Trilogy), Luke — who is attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order — forces Grogu to choose between following the path of the Jedi or returning to his father figure, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal).

Thanks to 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi — the second film in the Sequel Trilogy — we know that Luke’s new Jedi Order is doomed to fall at the hands of Ben Solo/Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). This, of course, happens roughly 30 years after the fall of the original Jedi Order alongside the Galactic Republic in 2005’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Considering the fact that the dogma and arrogance associated with the Jedi Order resulted in its own demise not once but twice, it makes sense that the next iteration would seek to break that cycle.
