Eternals Fans Are Absolutely Furious at the MCU Film’s Complete Oscars Snub

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Eternals are livid about the film getting no recognition from the 94th Academy Awards.

Oscar nominations were announced this week, with Marvel Studios represented in the Best Visual Effects category for its two other 2021 movies, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but nothing for the MCU’s most recent theatrical installment. While Eternals had a lackluster critical and commercial reception by Marvel standards, some devoted fans strongly believe that it deserved a place on the list, and complaints are popping up all over social media.

Fans took to social media with expressions of their disappointment — or shock — that Eternals didn’t get a nod for its VFX. Many tweets included GIFs or still images of special effects-heavy shots from the film as examples of why it deserved more recognition. While action and adventure movies are rarely chosen for Best Picture, they traditionally have their chance to shine through the Best Visual Effects award, which may be behind the ire from Eternals fans.

In addition to Shang-Chi and No Way Home, nominations for Best Visual Effects went to Dune, Free Guy and the latest James Bond film No Time to Die. As expected in any awards ceremony, there has been a show of dissatisfaction over the choices in several other categories as well. In particular, Spider-Man fans were hoping to see No Way Home nab a nomination for Best Picture as a stand-out superhero film with impressive ratings from critics and fans.

The premise of Eternals made it an ideal showcase for a variety of special effects. In addition to featuring a giant space-dwelling Celestial as its villain and the uniquely designed Deviants as the Eternals’ lifelong enemies, it had a large cast of new characters and each one had their own superpower. The many combat and action scenes let the heroes display their hand-to-hand combat skills with plentiful displays of flight, super-speed, laser eyes and magical projections — rounded out by a Bollywood dance number.

Eternals is now available to stream on Disney+. The 94th Academy Awards will be held on March 27. The show begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC.
