Ruben Fleischer, the director of the upcoming Uncharted film, confirmed that the next project in his sights is an adaption of another iconic PlayStation franchise.
Speaking to Digital Trends, Fleischer revealed, “I’m actually working on Jak and Daxter, a version of that, for PlayStation, which I think would be really cool to bring to life.” The director did not elaborate further on the project, suggesting that it’s still in the very early stages of production. It could be the case that Fleischer is still in the process of pitching the movie as neither PlayStation nor original developer Naughty Dog have commented on the existence of a Jak and Daxter movie.
Fleischer’s soft announcement comes just a few days after Uncharted star Tom Holland jokingly noted that he’d love to bring Jak and Daxter to the big screen, albeit in an unconventional manner. “I would play Jak,” said Holland, “But I would make it A24, so it was really weird and dark. Yeah, I would do a really weird live-action version of Jak and Daxter.” Many fans have pointed out that Holland may have already known about Fleischer’s idea to adapt the iconic video game as they’ve been working together on Uncharted.
Jak and Daxter is arguably one of PlayStation’s most recognizable franchises, starting its life out on the PlayStation 2. The first game in the series is a standard action-platformer wherein players take on the role of the titular Jak, whose friend Daxter is turned into a fictional creature known as an “ottsel” through the magic of “dark eco.” The game was successful enough to spawn a sequel, which took on a drastically different tone.
Jak II whisks players 500 years into the future, dumping them in the grim streets of Haven City. Fans were initially taken aback as the game borrows many design principles and mechanics from the Grand Theft Auto series, which was highly influential at the time. Jak 3 would follow a similar blueprint as both games went on to garner largely positive reviews for their compelling stories, polished gameplay and engaging combat. The franchise also received several spin-offs, including Jak X, Daxter and Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier.
Fleischer did not provide a release window for his Jak and Daxter project but fans wanting to see Uncharted can catch the explosive film when it hits theaters on Feb. 18.
